At lot of the rest of the early interest in him has come off of his speech at the DNC in 2004, IMO. By all accounts he is a bright man as Bubba correctly points out. He is quite the social liberal but I don't see him as quite so liberal on fiscal policy.
I think the best political statement I've seen on him is from the Fraternal Order of Police in Chicago who endorsed his Senate run. I believe the statement was along the lines of "we might not agree with all of his positions but he is open to compromise." In today's world some might see his compromising as pandering. Others might see it as pragmatic and refreshing.
Regardless, wake me up next year on this. It's too early and everything's a beauty contest and speculation right now. Besides, when is the last time a sitting US Senator won a presidential election?
