The gambling industry preys on the losers and the addicts!
You said it best earlier....we can agree to disagree.

It's not so much tieing the SEC and the casino together as it is the casino and the SEC working together...like I said before tie the bus trips for out-of-towners in a package of seeing a show at the SEC and a few hours of gambling at the casino. Marketing Horse Thief Resevoir to the rich retired RV'ers to stay there and spend a day in Dodge to see a show, visit Boot Hill, do a little gambling then they can RV on down the road.

There can be many positives if you choose to look at it that way. Or you pessimists can continue to look at the negatives and explain all the reasons that it won't work, even before anything is tried.

Come on Bubba,

Surely you can do better than "pessimists"? So we disagree! Is it really that big of a deal?

I could come up with all kinds of names for people who squander away their money gambling. I'm sure that not one name would be considered positive or optimistic.

Get my drift?

Bubba,

I really think your ideas about promoting tourism are good ones. Let's just leave the casino part out. Then you'd be catering to the entire family. I mean, what I'm I going to do with my kids for 2 hours while I'm at the casino?

Bubba,

Are you serious? Remember, I'm from out of town and you expect me to drop my kids off at a place that is unfamiliar to me? I'm sorry, but that's a risk I can not take. They are my responsibility, not the city's.

Oh, I didn't know you were from out of town, most adults I know that plan to go on out of town gambling trips for a day or more don't bring their kids with them.

I mean they ran a news segment down here in Arizona about Dodge Citys crime problem, and its bad that on a per capita basis Dodge challenges LA for per capita gang membership.

A casino can help draw legal people and possibly keep local kids around, it certainly can help tourism. With the SEC looking for an anchor client t o help it, well a Casino certainly would be a great anchor cient if developers were so inclined. More tax revenues(I would assume dodge and the county would get a piece of the gambling pie) the City can build its new jail, hire more cops, help with urban improvement and draw other more diverse businesses. Lets not forget that Mexicans love to gamble, at least they do here in Phoenix, and that would help to stop the outward flow of cash illegals do by sending there money to Mexico.

A casino yes would be a gamble, but honestly you have to roll the dice sometimes otherwise Dodge City could be stuck on stupid while the meatpackers hiring policies suck the cities heritage down the drain.

JMO though.
It's good to hear a person's opinion that is from outside the area. Glad you can keep an eye on what's going on here and welcome to posting on the board. Hope to have your input on other threads as well.

You are right on the local gov't to get a piece of the gambling revenue, it's built into the bill that was passed. While the local piece isn't all that big there is a piece of it that stays here, some gets sent to the state and some is set aside for gambling addiction programs.

I'm all for having the illegals spend a little (lose a little) money in the casino instead of sending it out of the country!

I guess all I can say is I respect your opinion I just don't agree.

I used to live in Las Vegas and can honestly say I liked the community far better than what we have now. I lived in an apartment complex and I don't remember ever hearing about crimes like we have in dodge.

We do, however, all agree we've got a real problem we just don't agree on the fix.

I view gambling as the heart of a package that could turn this town around. I have stood behind the WND project for two reasons. 1. A potential boost to tourism, 2. It was voted and passed by the people. Now after seeing the remarks by some of our *cough* leaders I believe the project would be a waist without a casino.

Dodge City needs an enema. Sure we could use the proposed monster truck arena for the Coyote races and get Bank of Americana to supply credit cards to illegals to keep the hotel full, but all that will only multiply the problems we have already. It's going to take an aggressive PACKAGE if we ever hope to become attractive to visitors. We need to remove the power out of the hands of those who have no concern for quality of life in dodge.

I believe with the proper promoting/backing the WND project could boost the draw to Dodge City, but unfortunately with our current leaders it would fail. A casino would take that control out of the hands of those who are happy to keep dodge a boarder town, and make tourism a viable option. Without it the WND project will only make matters worse.

Without gambling we might as well use the WND funding to build a new jail/prison because we're going to need it.
