I realize gambling will present its own set of issues, but frankly, things couldn't get much worse. I think our city people need a reality check. Quit patting yourself on the back when driving around the north end of town and seeing all the purdy new schools, and take a drive to the east and south. For that fact take a drive downtown. Its disgusting to say the least.

Next time you're in town take a drive to wilroads garden. Note the shanty town just south of the overpass. That place should be/would be condemned if the health department was to ever visit. Raw sewage in the streets where people just drop their drawers and crap when they get the urge. Plywood houses just wired together. The place should be bulldozed over.

Back in the early 1900's we had a place called the Mexican Village that was finally condemned that was in better living conditions than this lot.

Problem is visitors don't do much traveling on the well kept north side of town, but they do drive by shantyville on the way to and from dodge.

If what you say is true then I would urge you to report it - AND - follow up on it - there is low income housing units - it is inexcusable for people to live in unfit housing. If they live in squallor - sometimes it's legal squallor - if it's unhealthy to the extent of raw sewage in the streets it's a community issue and I would hope that if you have social moral fiber to report and followup.

That's just really sad!

The North side isn't as bad as the South but if you look around there is trash everywhere. You should see the mall parking lot today..it's horrible. Look at the field out there by Walmart...usually a lot of trash blowing around there also.

The area Dectector is talking about (out by Wilroads) is another mess that was not supposed to happen like it did. Roach was going to build this "manufactured housing" community out there, and it was supposed to be a nice addition, according to the plans etc that he showed the county commissioners. Then once they approved it, he drug in all kinds of "junk trailer houses" and shoved them in there, and then left the scene of the crime. He did the same thing in Garden City. All of the "requirements" went down the "crapper", and they let him get away with it. I could expand on this, but I think you get the drift!

Just because the culprit left doesn't dismiss the health threat to the community. Report it and hold the city accountable. My roomie is with "the city" and he handels these type things daily - hell just last night they were swamped with attorneys of such "hell holes" and ya know what?? The attorneys lost. They put the property in the hands of the city attorney for charges so the property will be in litigation, the warnings from the city will expire, the east coast owner won't be able to auction it off........ and it will be demolished cause all the time frames will run out on the owner. Ya gotta be persistant tho. This is about a 300 unit complex - not just a few shanties............ but the hazard is the same.

If the city starts litigation to demolish - trust me - the owner or a representative will show up!

Roach sold them to all the mexicans, then split town. Dunno if he is still in wichita or not? And, that area is in the county, not the city.

It's too late to place it. That bet's already been placed and is covered by our future retail purchases along with our real estate valuations. Our commissioner's are hooked on spending so every increase in cash flow is gunna be needed.

It's a common problem. Our state and national legislators are also hooked on spending.
