That’s Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy (D), Long Island, New York. Her husband was killed in that Long Island train massacre several years ago. She ran on the single issue of gun control.

For anyone that doesn’t know what a barrel shroud is, it’s just a heat shield over the barrel.

I didn't know what it was either. Only time I've ever shot a gun was in boot camp. (By the way, I was a terrible shot.) No way you should ever be presenting legislation unless you actually know what your legislation is doing.

Sorry, this was a good question that deserves an answer. I really think that everyone should back off for 2-3 months. I know that's not realistic, and I know it won't happen. If those of you who are pro-gun wait around, you'll be overran by those who want to ban guns. It sucks. The idealist in me wishes everyone could relax for a bit; the realist in me knows it will never happen.

When you're a fence-sitter like me, it's easy. You do nothing. You feel like you have time. When you've already chosen a side, you can do one of two things: stand your ground, fight back, and risk being accused of exploiting the tragedy, or, sit back, do nothing, and risk losing your political fight. You're in a no-win situation, and I understand that.

Well I'm for guns - so some of this I don't see as knee jerk (ya know my side of the fence)........ but I understand what your sayin Flange. Hey thanks for addressing the question!

I think lots of folks on both sides feel if they wait they are missing the opportunity of the situation. Procrastination to addressing a known issue. Proactiveness not reactive is often the defense.

I see both sides - really I do but truth is often times you don't have time to wait. Copy cat events have been everywhere. I heard there were several schools that were threatened that same week.

Hell Friday Nasa got rousted and yesterday some rich dude took out 1 and injured 2 or 3. Course there were plenty of gun owners in that building but no one stepped up. The gunman killed himself and sent his obit to his friends and family. Why????............ he was bein evicted from the galleria apts. Sometimes if you are crazy - you are just crazy.

I don't think either side will wait........... it's politics as usual.

Flange you have made an excellent summary of the situation. Most on the pro-gun side would prefer to wait until emotions had time to settle down and all the facts were in. That doesn’t happen and to sit back while the other side plays on emotion and sets the tone makes my side appear to have positions that are indefensible.

After Columbine the Colorado legislature wisely tabled all gun related bills, pro and con, until the next session. An example the Federal government will not follow.

BTW, over the weekend I read some newspaper pundit calling for a ban on “semiautomatic machineguns”. I guess those are like “semiautomatic revolvers” and “semiautomatic bolt action rifles”.
