| All I have to say is politics does not belong on or during a natural disaster. What Sebelius said was BS and has been proven by KSNG statements and her own backtracking. When Clinton was slow to relieve(2 weeks slow in some areas) I didn't cry or point fingers. Remember the floods of 93 in Northeast Kansas? There were people stranded for 2 weeks without National Guard or FEMA help in parts of New Jersey and Delaware during one hurricane durring Clinton's reign. If Katrina was a smaller storm thbat only caused localized flooding and destroyed smaller outlying areas that had smaller populations the democrats wouldn't have peeped, but just like Andrew, the Dims and the Press jump on even an hour of delay because of what party the President represents, it really and trully is a crime whenever that happens. |

| Rescue I know of 3 Army Reserve Fire Fighting Units in the state of KS. I have a friend in one, it is in Garden City. They have 2 trucks that have all the equipment you would need to help. I talked with him the other day and he told me that they would not get called up to help because they are not NG, or state money. It would take the gov. to ask for federal help. But she would have to pay the bill. He said it has some thing to do with the color of money. I know there are other Army Reserve units out there are they being used? So is it the lack of equipment or just don't want to pay the big bill? I would think that you would do what it takes to get the people back on there feet and get it cleaned up. |

| The spirit of volunteering often gets doused when the reality of money rears it's ugly head. Army Reserve doesn't belong to the state - they belong to Bush I believe. Maybe your friends unit just wasn't asked for.

| That has never stopped the State of Kansas of contracting help from the reserves before. I spent a week in 2001 moving equipment for the KsNG. There has been other times the Reserves have helped, like the 1999 Moore, OK tornado. |

| well maybe they just weren't needed as far a equiptment goes. who knows??? I bet they are lookin for debris movers now. lots of times it's not machines but muscle that you need. don't take no act of state or congress for folks to offer up thier muscle - no matter who they are or what they do. Course sometimes there are just enough bodies and they don't need more. I'm sure that ya'll are doin much better than NO did. When they came here they were beggin for bodies, nurses, money, food, clothes, anything. ya'll look much better than we did but then again we stepped up when no one else did, we took thousands.............. not two thousand, and it's just a different scenerio all together. Ya'll look good tho on the tube!

It's an emergency, but there must still be a responsible oversight of expenditures and appropriate use of resources. If it's needed, get it and use it. If it's frivolous, don't expect to be reimbursed. |

| ALBANYS INSANITY » Blog Archive » Democrat Governor caught politicizing Kansas Something bad may be brewing, or it's just conspiracist's going wild. " A brief summary: A source apparently close to the situation has told Quinn that Sebelius called Brownback shortly after she made the Katrina-like statement to the press to apologize. She allegedly told Brownback that she had been instructed by Howard Dean and Dick (Durbin?) to blame the fictional “lack of response” to the hurricane on the absence of National Guard troops and equipment, which had been diverted to Iraq (not true). She said she would not have said these things “unless she had to,” and that she was told not to pass up an opportunity like this. KS Governor Sebilius (D) said: 1. Howard Dean called me at 5AM this morning and said we needed to “use this”. 2. [Senator] Dick [Durbin] called about two hours later and told me not to ask for federal help. 3. We had “too many” National Guard personnel " If that report is true, that is criminal. It also makes you wonder about Katrina and the lack of control which Blanco and Nagin had going into and directly after the Hurricane hit. |
