Bad Parents

I think medication is far too often used to deal with childhood issues, but are necessary in some cases. Today we simply deal with a trouble child by slapping them with a disorder and passing out the drugs. We still don't know the longterm effect these drugs will have, but as usual, we'll deal with those issues when we get there.

I'm no child psychologist but I have grown up around enough people to see the longterm results of their parenting. Or lack of. And as with most of us I'm sure we have looked back at our childhood, and at least in our own case, can make a fairly accurate account for who we are and why.

I think a lot of the behavior problems in society today stem from our anti-religion folk and Liberals. Perhaps one in the same?

I saw on the news today that a resent poll showed only 14% knew the Ten Commandments, while 35% could name the Brady Bunch. I'm sure this has to do with the Ten Commandments being taboo in schools and government. Now before you Liberals get your panties in an uproar about having religion force fed by the bible thumper, let me elaborate.

Now if God had written a really killer cookie recipe would you refuse to use it simply because of its source? I think the Ten Commandments is just that. A really killer recipe to live by no matter what its origin might be. Now I realize a few ingredients might trip your trigger, but hey! if you don't like nuts in your cookies, just ignore that part.

Well it really doesn't matter because in our case the anti-religious has managed to make these cookies only available at home, and if your parents are much for cooking? oh well what ya gonna do? So now we have a child behavior problem and we're thinking passing out the drugs is far easier than expecting the parent to deal with the issue.

All I can say is I'm very glad my parents cared enough to whip my butt when necessary. Not that it happened very often, but I understood it was a real possibility.

And for those of you who think you've got that unique super intelligent 2 year old that understands right from wrong with nothing more than a few understanding words, Man I feel for ya 10 years from now.

I have one of those smart little 2 year olds and I know that if she will be anything like I was when I was younger I will have to sleep with my eyes open, if you know what I mean. Im terrified of what is to come of the teenage years, I hope for her sake that I can teach her right from wrong before its too late.

I agree with you Detector, but how long ago was that? These days you can care all you want, and you know the right thing is a pop on the butt, but because everybody does not agree with that then you risk loosing your child to the system.
I think that is what is wrong with a lot of kids these days is that they need a pop or two daily if the need is there, but they too have been taught do what you want, nobody will touch you and if they do and you tell the right person, then you win. But what they do not get because they are kids is that the pop is for their own good, and instead they end up in the court system. Once in, it is hard to get out.

Well, I was raised by parents who believed in spanking. I learned quickly what I could and what I couldn't get away with....believe me.

Richard Pryor use to do a comedy bit where he talked about having to go get his own switch to get spanked with.....I could so relate to that. We had to go out in the back yard, cut a lilac switch, bring it to my dad, who preceeded to spank us with it........if the switch wasn't the right length, you went back out to get a "more adequate" one.......

Spanking was the norm back then...part of the problem now is you have a bunch of idiots raising kids who can't differentiate between spanking and beating.

My parents tried that on me once. I said "no" if you want to beat me with it you go get it.

The thing is now days our kids aren't "US". Kids now days are much more informed and wired to what's going on. This generation responds differently to discipline than we did. I was spanked and we had spankings at school also. (the paddle) They have removed corporal punishment from school I think. We have raised the "time out" generation. I'm an idealist (damn me for that) and probably have a lot to learn because I have a 7 month old daughter but I think it's all about parenting. I don't think spankings are necessary in most instances. I think raising a child is about setting boundries and standards and enforcing those standards. If a child does something wrong, have the time and patience to explain why it is wrong and the consequences. IF they continue to do it there HAS to be consequences. The first time you say..IF YOU DO THAT then THIS will happen and it doens't...you lose credibility and the kid will walk over you from that point on. I'm far, FAR from the perfect parent and am learning as I go but my child already knows the meaning of a FIRM "NO". (thanks to my wifey) Kids need attention and motivation. When both parents are working 8 -10 hours a day then come home tired HOW much attention is the child really getting? To many of our kids are shoved into daycares for someone else to raise then we wonder why they have issues.
