Pit Bull Question

I agree with you that almost any breed can be trained to be loving, but turn on a dime under pressure. My thought, though, is pretty simple. Why the hell would anybody GET a dog and THEN ask about whether the breed is allowed?

The law states in a brief way that after March of 2005 no new pitbulls will be registured and no new pitulls will be allowed to live with in the city limits. If they were registured before March 2005 there were certian conditons that had to be met. You can not bring in any more pitbulls to the city and if you have a registured one that has pups the pups have to be out of the city I think within in 6 weeks. If your neighbor did not have it registured pitbull before March of 2005 he could be facing up to a $1000.00 fine and possible 6 mos in jail. I knew several who recieved the $1000.00 fine because they did not follow the ordiance. The ordiance is about 8 pages long on the requirements.

Just like with anything else, they usually go off what they're taught... not just pitbulls but animals in general.. My friend has had a pit bull for 5 years now.. and has had it since she was a pup... that dog doesn't have an evil bone in her body... she's never once tried to get mean even when were playing with her.. She lets our 3 and 4 years old pull at her and climb all over her.. She's the most loveable dog I've met... and she's pure pitbull...

It's not the dog that you should be worried about.. it's how the dog was raised.

I agree - my son has 2 and they're both as docile as any other breed - probably moreso. They guard the baby cuz they know it'd be their necks if anything happened to him!!! Kinda funny the way they do that....nobody goes near if he's sleeping.

Personally I don't think its as much to do with the dogs demeanor as it is the breed. By breed I'm talking about the design much like a shark. Designed to to kill. Them massive jaws and neck work in harmony with it's natural want to hold on and shake the life out of its victim.

Like I said, having a big cat, designed also to kill, is dangerous and even though it could be nothing but a big kitten, all it takes is one mistake and someone could pay with their life. That mistake could be completely out of the owners control.

Say while gone the house catches fire and your pit bull, already freaking out, is loose because a fireman/policeman opens a door. There is a reason these dogs have been targeted as dangerous. And I don't think its just paranoia but experience.

I've been bitten before by dogs whose owner thought "they don't bite" and "would never hurt a flea." I'm just thankful they weren't pit bulls.

For someone as intelegent as you are Detector, it amazes me that you view this like racism almost. I am not saying you are a racist, I am saying your argument is like talking logic to a racist. You are going to compare a domestic dog to a wild tiger? Or it's breeding as to that of a shark? Damn, I guess i have been wrong, as have every other dog trainer and breeder in the world. How could I not see your logic? I am now going to say that every car is evil since a few of my cats have been run over by them. I have also decided that every person over 6'4" has to be a great basketball player. From now on, any dog with a jaw wider than 5 inches is to be considered a killer since it can obviously hurt me when it bites. Damn, I feel better now that i can see the world through your eyes. I feel totally stupid for being so misguided all my life. Thank you.

There are domestically bread tigers that turn on their master. Pit Bulls have a certain demeanor because of they breed. Can they be playful pups and great pets...SURE but how many times have you heard a boxer or a lahpso Ahpso or whatever eating kids and such. Why do they fight pit bulls and not snauzers? I would say because it's in their breeding.

Read the part about behavorial genetics of dogs. Some dogs are natural hunters, some are natural herd dogs and some are naturally aggressive. Breeds have different characteristics. You wouldn't take a pit bull to herd sheep and you wouldn't take a Chiahuahua to be a blood hound because these dogs don't demonstrate these traits in their blood. A bloodhound can be trained to be a bloodhound like a pit bull can be trained to fight but if you don't train a bloodhound they still have the natural tendancies. LIke what Detector was saying...you can have something bread in captivity but if it is a "wild animal" it still has the wild animal instincts.
