| I don't think the point of the article was "Hispanics for hispnanics sake," but rather they're underrepresented. The point of a representative government is to give a voice that echoes the population. When half of our population is hispanic, yet there's only been one hispanic in an official position in almost 20 years... that seems to be a problem to me. But, that also seems echoes the tendency of people on this board to assume that all the hispanics in Dodge City are illegal. I agree, that simply to plug a hispanic into an office because there's a dearth is a bad idea. But, if there are quality leaders in the community who simply haven't stepped forward... then yes. Something needs to be done. But hey. That's just a moderate's opinion.

| If they can get forged documents to work and drive, then whats stopping them from casting an illegal vote? Like I always said.... this so called benefit from cheap labor is short lived. It's already evident...after a year or so of being here, the "gimee gimee syndrome" starts. Despite their illegal presence, they start to convince themselves of their right to government handouts, equal pay, healthcare...and yes, representation.

| Well, maybe something needs to be done, but voting Hispanics in office simply because they're Hispanics isn't the answer. If an Hispanic ran for office that was the best candidate, then yes - they deserve the office. Let's try not to get carried away with political correctness.

| Hispanics (the hard working, legal, assimilated) should have a voice in government but you can't MAKE them be there or INSERT them. Nationally the LEFT is doing all that they can to make sure the ILLEGAL's have a vote and to give them political power. As our country starts giving power to the millions of illegals here (amnesty etc) then it will change the demographics of our country forever. I believe we are at a crossroads with immigration (illegal), we either take the benefits away and crack down or we prepare to lose a lot in the future.

I know this is going to sound racists but I'm simply stating my observation. It seems to me that Hispanics tend to look out for their own. I'm not saying this is a good or bad thing, just my observation. Blacks and Whites are no different other than we can publicly admit it. The difference is its only a select few radicals such as the KKK and Black Panthers? And not all Hispanics but the majority of newcomers.

In my opinion, if they are here illegally, they don't deserve any representation.

I'm not saying I disagree with you but some states are going down that road in order to get them to vote etc. To make the community better the Hispanic (legal) part of the community should have some representation. There really aren't too many Hispanic leaders within the community at the city/county level. Based on the demographics our city commish should have at least a couple Hispanics on the board but there isn't. I wonder if it's apathy or what. Are there any Hispanics on the school board?

| As a permanent resident alien (and homeowner) I pay taxes, lots of them, but my status does not entitle me to vote. The last time they had a general election in England (when I lived there) I chose not to vote. I read ALL the statements and policies from the 3 leading parties, and came to the conclusion that none of the candidates would be able to do the job to my satisfaction, so I didn't vote. When I tell people this of course I get all the standard stuff, my vote was "wasted" and I have "no right to complain". I personally have never understood this. If I vote for no-one then surely I can complain about all of them? If you voted (for example) for Bush, then surely you cannot complain about anything he does because your vote put him there. Simplistic politics on my behalf I guess. Aside from not being able to vote, the other key difference between me and regular US Citizen's (like your goodselves) is that if I am convicted of any crime (we are talking rape, murder, robbery etc..., not regular traffic tickets!) then I am instantly deported. I understand the conditions under which I am here, and accept them without question. Indeed, when you get right into the mundane details of immigration as I did then most of it is common sense, and there to protect the American people. It seems fair to me that if (for example) a visitor to this country rapes an American woman that he be kicked out and told never to come back. The voting thing might become an issue for me in time, but I do not plan to rape, murder or rob anybody (or tag their house) you'll be glad to hear, so I have no problem with the stipulations of my green card. Of course, if you were here illegally, with little or no respect for the laws, customs, traditions and people of this country, then your opinion and actions may be of a different nature, as indeed we have all seen first hand.

| Sounds to me like you are an immigrant that wants to contribute to America not rape and pillage it. Good post
