| Insurance Management: no - the boss would keel over. It's also in our handbook. If you have tats or body piercings, they cannot be exposed at work. Meaning, it better be on a part of your body that doesn't show. So, navel piercings, tats on upper arms, body or upper legs would probably fly. We're a pretty conservative industry. Blue, Black and sometimes (gasp!) brown suits.....

| ...and I thought someone on the board said it was getting popular and was becoming the norm? Hmmmmm.....Like I said before...maybe at Applebee's, the local bar and a few select places but NOT so much in a professional environment.

Although, just to clarify, I don't have any tattoos, and my non-ear piercing is (usually) not visible. Sometimes, though, if you know where to look... well, you know. It's not entirely about metal sticking out of a person's face or surface piercings visible above the shirt collar. Firefighters aren't allowed to have facial hair, with the occasional exception of mustaches. The reason? Facial hair doesn't allow the SCBA mask to get a good seal. The harness on an SCBA mask is the reason I'm not big into wearing earrings. You never know when the pager's going off, and the harness on the mask will easily rip out an earring - especially when you're in a hurry. However, haven't had a bit of problem with the other things. Bunker gear provides quite a bit of padding when working with a hoseline, even less than a week after fresh piercings. The first time I slid my torso over a school bus seat while doing extrication training, though... that smarted! |

| I knew several people back in the 60's and 70's that had marijuana leaves tattooed on themselves. I only know of one that still has that tatoo, and I thnk she has it "disguised"! Personally, I feel like AOO and the rest, I would never put anything "permanent" on my body that I might regret later. Alot of guys in the Service had tatoos, but they were usually covered by a shirtsleeve or something. |

Facial piercings aren't allowed, but not because it wouldn't be professional. They're not allowed out of safety concerns. And I didn't say anything about tattoos. I know many firefighters with visible tattoos. |

| I made sure my tattoos were in a location that could be covered (ankle, foot) and told my kids to do the same........alot of employers don't want to see them........and especially during the job interview.
