Outside of working at Hot Topic, a hotel, Applebees or Walmart I'm not sure there are too many professional places that would hire someone with tat's on their neck/face/forehead or whatever. Lets take our local community for example...I haven't seen any professionals with a lot of piercings or visible tatoo's (maybe that's why they are professionals?!) I'm not against tatoo's so don't get me wrong. I would go to a Doctor or buy a house from a real estate agent with a big loop hanging out of their nose or a tatoo running up the side of their neck. It's not predjudice but it's my dollar and I can choose where to spend it.
Maybe it isn't normal in the little bubble you call your comfort zone but let me assure you that it is becoming very much the norm. I work with many, many professional people and while you might not be able to tell upon meeting them, many are in fact heavily tattooed. Body mod and the like isn't even just for the Hot Topic crowd either. Trust me when I tell you that I have been waited on at a bank where the tellers and even *gasp* loan officers have had stretched ears. It has gotten to the point where grandma's get tattooed to mark special occasions and doctors and lawyers and even preschool teachers can have entire sleeves done and no one blinks an eye. It truly isn't a big deal anymore. I don't know where you get your sources but it is so mainstream now. Getting a tattoo is hardly a way to rebel anymore since your mailman and gynecologist are donning ink. To think that tattoos and body mod equal a certain "class" of people is pretty small thinking.

Doesn't mean you will like it but hey, it is the case. I don't like stone washed jeans but I still see plenty of folks wearing those around in Kansas so it seems we both deal with norms that we don't like.

Oh and if you click here then you can no longer say you haven't seen a tattooed doctor.

I work at a hotel w/ tons of corporate guests, I have stretched ears, the only exposed tattoo is the one in my ear, and I've gotten nothing but great responses from them. It's not the body modifications you should be worried about it's the person, just like with anything else. I can tell alot about someone just from their tattoos and piercings and the quality of them, alot (not all) of them are some of the coolest, most intelligent, and open minded people. Most people can't look past them being highly modified so they never get a chance to see that side of them.
I've asked on a couple of occasions for a new server because of all the things sticking out of them. I don't really care how they express themselves but it creeped me out and made it difficult to eat.

I took my piercings out long before this job, I have a cbr in my septum that I flip up when I do wear it at work, a tongue ring, and my ears are stretched to a 2g. If you don't believe "professionals" have heavy mods, check out the book ModCon, that should open your eyes a bit. Just because you can't see them doesn't mean they're not there. Of course it's your choice to spend your dollar w/ whoever, I'm not saying otherwise.

The point I was trieng to make is that they ARE becoming the norm, they are more popular than ever before. Alot of jobs are accepting them more.

What do you have against people with tattoos and piercings? just curious.

When I came back to Dodge from Colorado w/ my ex we both had quite a few piercings (facial included) and tattoos, people looked at us in disgust. A little girl was smiling and asking me questions about them and her mom pulled her away as if we doing something wrong. We got that all the time, but we were used to it. It's sad that a child was caring enough to ask questions to better understand something, and the parent thought so badly of us that she pulled her away. My ex was denied a job at a tire shop because of his tattoos but was hired as a legal assistant and was able to show his tattoos and his "holes in his ears". Figure that one out!! To each their own though, I understand everyone will have their opinion which their entitled to. I don't mind the looks, stares, and snickers I get.. but I do get offended by close-minded a-holes that can't keep their opinions to themselves and go out of their way to ensure I hear it when I walk by.

I have nothing against tats..My ex wife had a couple. I'm sure in certain area's it's more accepted by the population. My point is that your AVERAGE farm guy around here isn't going to buy insurance or see a doctor with dime sized holes in his ears. Just MY perception...right or not. I know a lot of professional people that have tat's and piercings also...soldiers included. A lot of places have dress codes that will not allow those type of things. I can't speak for San Francisco or wherever but I can tell you being in the military and travelling a lot I don't see that many people with body modifications in professional jobs. I am not saying that they don't exist but it's NOT the norm. Yes there are grandmothers with tatoo's and ect...yadda yadda yadda...but it's NOT the norm.

That's understandeable in the food industry. If someone can't or won't properly take care of their work (piercings, tattoos) it could become hazardous to anyone they deal with. Just what I said earlier though, the manager should be smart enough to hire people with proper hygiene, modified or not.

It's way past being the norm, here's something I found "Take tattoos. As of 2006, Penn writes, more than 30 million Americans have them. And it's not just for sailors anymore: A Harris Survey found the best-represented income group among tattooed Americans (22%) are people making over $75,000 a year — or as Penn dubs them, the Upscale Tattooed.
" found from this article Review: Tome tracks our trends, from tattoos to snipers - USATODAY.com

Tuscon Weekly Bashes Women With Tattoos and Body Art in General there's another good article for you

that should open your eyes a bit. Just because you can't see them doesn't mean they're not there. Of course it's your choice to spend your dollar w/ whoever, I'm not saying otherwise. If I don't see them then it's no big deal. I'm talking about people with metal in their face and such. To each their own, I don't mind them doing it. If someone wants to pierce their whole face I say go for it...that's why I serve this country for choice..but I also have the choice to not have that person wait on me, sell me insurance etc....

The point I was trieng to make is that they ARE becoming the norm, they are more popular than ever before. Alot of jobs are accepting them more. Sure, but I would venture to say that a lot MORE professional jobs don't allow it...

What do you have against people with tattoos and piercings? just curious. Not a thing...I have thought about getting a tatoo myself. I kind of like them. I think there are certain tatoo's and tatoo's in certain places that are just tasteless....
The bottom line is people look at appearance first and foremost...Is it right...I don't know but that's human nature. When you sit down with a broker, insurance agent, sales person, etc they usually dress very nicely because they want to make a "good first impression". Perhaps having a face full of metal and a tatoo running up the side of their neck would work with a slight few people but lets be realistic...if is was as popular as you say it was then they would be doing it. The area you live in also has a lot to do with it...My Niece works for Deutschbank as a corporate trainer. She told me that they wouldn't even consider hiring someone looking like that to be a mortgage broker or the like. She used to work in a consulting firm and the same there. She's worked in cities all over the country and said she's never worked with anyone like that...NOW that doesn't mean it's not popular like you say but I was just curious if you know someone besides some guy in a book?
