Up In Smoke goes the Rights of business owners as the city/government forces it's foot ever farther into the door. Our leaders seem to have adopted the mentality that "other cities are jumping off the cliff, so we better jump."

Don't ya just love the comments like "I just hate seeing more government control over the small business man, but we just need to do this thing." Doesn't government already regulate smoking in public places?

I know this sounds so simple but why not put it to a public vote? Oh I know! the results would not be to your personal plans. I mean it's not like you represent the majority anyway. If that were true we wouldn't be a sanctuary city.

Oh well, I guess the bright side is after we take care of them damn smokers, we can set our sights on them damn drinkers and fat people.

Only in certain area's. Taking away a business's rights they want to follow. Making the city safer for the tax paying citizens....they won't follow. 3 of them come up for reelection in 2008 and hopefully people will take a good, hard look at that and get rid of those that need to be gotten rid of.

Well I'm not saying that our leaders have a problem with shooting themselves/us in the foot, but a smoking ban would do just that. Unless they can figure out how to appropriately say you can't smoke in public with the exception of the casino.

Then that may just be their whole idea. What better way to ensure a casino will fail than to ban smoking?

Ever been to Las Vegas and see all those gamblers pulling those levers and puffing on a cigarette? just try and tell that old lady she can't smoke while in the casino.

You can bet there will be an exception for the casino.

I would say you're right on the money with that thought, Bubba. Up here, there are floors in the casino's (anyway the multi-floor casinos) that are smoking-banned. Course the fun stuff is where the smoking is. It has to be a personal decision. Do I want to have fun and maybe walk away with some extra cash? Or do I want to keep myself from smelling bad when I get home.

And see...there lies the issue. It shouldn't be ABOUT smoking per say. The issue is what can and can't the city do. How far is the reach of the arm of gov't. If the city can come into YOUR private business and tell you that you can't allow smoking then next is the transfat (like in NY) and after that they will be told the can't sell a Whopper w/ cheese because it's too many calories etc....People should take their personal feelings about smoking out of the situation and look at the situation for what it really is about...gov't intervention in private business.

Personally I would like to ban smoking in public or at least 50 feet from an entrance but I would RATHER leave that up to the BUSINESS owner to make that call NOT the city commissioners.
