It’s still a long way from over. I’m hearing April before anyone can get enough delegates for a lock on the nomination.

McCain has done well with independents and moderates but he’s coming up on states with closed primaries and that could change. I am hearing a lot of comments that if McCain is the nominee folks that will vote Democrat or just stay home. The sediment being if we’re going to get a president that is going to screw things up anyway it’s preferable it happens under the Democrat brand name.

On the Democrat side, I’ve been seeing claims that Hillary is cheating and rigging elections at a couple of the lefty web sites. It’s either an admission that Democrats cheat to win or just the same old whining that someone cheated when they don’t get their way. Expect more of the same if the Republicans win in November.

The burning question on everyone’s mind this election;

He inherited it from Carter. Record gas prices, double digit mortgage rates and all.

Oh come on, you're older than I am. I was just coming of age back then and was still in college (and a republican) during Carter's presidency.

The period covering the run up to the post Vietnam through the Ford and Carter terms and into the first two years of the Reagan presidency were periods of some of the highest inflation this country had ever seen. (Remember Ford's WIN buttons?). What was perverse about that period was the the conventional economic wisdom (Keynes) held that in period of high unemployment there would be low inflation and vice versa. Unfortunately the country had both.

It the Fed Chairman (a Carter appointee who was kept on until 1987 or so by the Reagan camp) that created what the Wall Street Journal this week called "the country's worse recession since the great depression" during the early part of Reagan's term in order to tame inflation. Reagan didn't inherit a recession, and to be fair, he didn't necessarily create it either but it happened on his watch.

(The article was in an analysis of the issues facing the next president and is a pay site but if you (or others) want to read it, send me an email address and I can send you a copy.)

I still have the closing papers on the first house I ever bought in 1982, with a special "below market" rate of 13.52%.

We’re really splitting hairs here OoD. There was a brief recession under Carter followed by a larger one under Reagan. Gas prices hit a record high in 1980 (adjusted for inflation) before Reagan took office. That aside, let me cherry pick your post.

and...

Reagan didn't inherit a recession, and to be fair, he didn't necessarily create it either but it happened on his watch.
With that it might have been more correct for me to say that Reagan inherited an ongoing problem with the economy. As you point out “he didn’t necessarily create it” (a recession) but it did get turned around on his watch. I too had a double digit ARM mortgage in the 80’s and was acutely aware of interest rate changes. From the mid 80’s I watched the interest rates fall consistently until about 1992 or 93 when they took a turn back up. Also my pay raises were based on a COLA and I watched those get smaller. With both paychecks and house payments tied to inflation and cost of living you do get a handle on economic indicators up close and personal.

In any event we do agree when it comes to the question “Wasn't the last recession a Regan generated thing?” the answer is no.

I don't dig too deep into politics usually, it is more of a gut feeling. The President is usually just a figure since the machine that is our government runs things, at least that is how I see it. A President's policies usually don't show any reactions until after they have left office, it is a long term thing.

That being said, I think the Democrats have painted themselves into a bad corner by having a choice only between Hillary and Barrack. This has nothing to do, or at least my opinion has nothing to do with, them being Democrats, it is just a personal assumption.
Barrack is personable, a great speaker and highly intelligent....but he has no experience. That alone will kill his chances. He can say all day about what he WANTS to do, but he has had no experience in actually doing it. He has not had enough time, or political power, to surround himself with advisors that can do the jobs. While he, and credit to him for this, has not himself played a race card his supporters have, and that will also come to hurt him.
Hillary is, well, Hillary. I personally do not like her. I think she has come into politics by proxy. I do not, and did not, see her as a strong woman "backing her man" during Bill's problems. I seen her as a gold digger. While I believe the president's family is important.......it just always struck me as wrong that while Bill was president she was constantly involved with making decisions and policies. I did not elect her so why the hell was she making decisions? Again, if her supporters are going to say they will elect her because she is a woman it will alienate those who are not women and make them vote against her just because. She also has no experience to speak of. While I do not know exactly what she has done good for New York..........I have not heard anything that she has done.
McCaines problem is he is too weak on issues. While I believe he is an honest person (at least as honest as a politicain can be), he just seems wimpy. It doesn't bother me that he is middle of the road and more liberalish than conservative........it bothers me that it appears he leads by his heart and not his head. I do not believe waterboarding is torture. Uncomfortable and scary yes. I would not want it done to me....but then again i would not want to be sprayed with mace either.
Romney..........just to friggin pretty.
