Its about freaking time !

THE MAIN reasons I am NOT a war supporter.

Does anyone understand the Hell our vets go through when they return or does anyone THINK about this end result. How many damned years has this problem been around. And ain't it a shame. AMERICAN DISGRACE !!!!!

Law suit !!!! Just to get what is OWED to them...........Jesus Christ.

I don't know if this is gonna help, but its a start.

Problem is that on Feb 22nd it looks like the VA will be forced to accommodate vets with PTSD and they already admit not being able to accommodate them. So what's the point of forcing the VA to care for mental issues they aren't able to address? That's going to make matters worse - God knows how ****ed up they will be then. That's not going to help the vets or decrease the suicides.

The vets ought to be able to seek help in private settings and the VA ought to be forced to pay for it. That would get them off their asses to actually have a functioning mental health branch of the VA and not a "service" that looks good on paper but actually is just a way to grab more tax money for some other pet project they have.

It's just an embarrassment that we have no problem teaching young men how to kill and be warriors then when they are damaged goods upon return, the very agency that solicits for money and gets fed funds for it's very existence - turns it's back on them. Just an example of a really crappy govt agency that rarely has to account for it's actions. Change - I want REAL change!

Interesting reading. There are LOTS and LOTS of programs to help troops transitioning from the military. A lot of vets don't sign up or use these programs and succomb to the pitfalls of transferring from military life to the civilian world. Very few people actually use their GI Bill to attend college for free. A number of the homeless or jobless vets are unfortunately alcohol or drug dependent.

Many vets need the care NOW - not 1 year from the time they sign up. Check the waiting time from sign up to being in the system lately? It's quite a wait in Texas. Thats why there are agencies to fill the gap the VA in it's bureaucratic insanity has created. It's too big and basically isn't the best functioning program around.

I wonder how many of the homeless and addicted ever said - I want to join the military, and come out damaged goods. Not many, the VA tho is still responsible for reaching out to these folks but they do very little of that.

The VA is a good idea - but needs some serious attention to detail.

I agree. If the Armed Services paid half as much attention to the returning veterans as Homeland Security pays to airline travelers, we'd be able to transition these young people and allow them to have successful lives after deployment. I really don't like them to tell the soldiers to buck up when they get home - we're recruiting kids for God's sake - they truly don't know how to handle it mentally. Then we slap 'em on the back when they come home and tell 'em to get on with gettin' on...

Exactly. And God forbid you can't find a job in this crappy economy and need welfare to feed yourself. We can't be having any of that!!!! That ain't what we're fighting for...........

Oh gee - could it be that they are "people who receive financial assistance from tax payers cause they don't support themselves"???? Army needs to stop putting these folks on the welfare rolls!!!

Welfare is a needed program for many - there is always going to be abusers but most welfare goes to single parents (usually women) cause their baby's daddy can't have too many babies to count or they are so drug dependent and alcohol dependent they aren't functional. Mental health is in shambles. Assistance comes in many forms and helps many people - it's not all a bad idea - it's a needed assistance. We need to quit judging people by their financial sheets and start looking at how they got there - guilt and scorning never changed too much of anything. We need to start lifting our own citizens up for a change, worry about our own people for a start!
