Activists in Mexico plan one-day boycott of U.S. businesses

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/americ....ap/index.html

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- "The Great American Boycott" is spreading south of the border, as activists call for Mexicans to boycott U.S. businesses on May 1.

The protest is timed to coincide with a May 1 boycott of work and shopping in the United States that also has been dubbed "A Day Without Immigrants." The boycott, which grew out of huge pro-migrant marches across the United States, is designed to pressure Congress to legalize millions of undocumented people.
--------------------------------------
For some it's a way to express anti-U.S. sentiment, while others see it as part of a cross-border, Mexican-power lobby.

ANTI-U.S SENTIMENT? If they are expressing this particular thought why the HELL are they here?
--------------------------------------
And ironically, the protest targets the U.S. business community, which is one of the strongest supporters of legalization or guest-worker programs.

"At the end of the day, boycotting would only hurt corporations that are backing what people want done in the immigration bill," said Larry Rubin, CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce in Mexico. Rubin is encouraging people to write to their legislators instead of boycotting.

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. I've got an idea let's fire anyone who doesn't show up to work and can't prvide a dorctor's note or roll in the corpse of a recently deceased loved one (immediate family only). For everyone else... Get out and shop on May 1! This will be a day you can actually feel good about going to Malwart.

Make a note of any business that closes May 1st for this protest and continue to boycott those places.

Highway... one could almost take this to mean you are agreeing with me on something.

It happens now and then that you are right on something. It’s been long overdue.

I have a very close friend - ok my fiancee - that is the manager of a local place here in Dodge City. It is a franchise of a national chain. About 3/4 of her staff is hispanic. She has no problems hiring hispanics, working with hispanics, and promoting hispanics. However, every hispanic employee she has is asking off for May 1. What is this going to accomplish in this situation? Will it show "the man" how important hispanics are in the work force? No...it is going to make the non-hispanic employees of this business have to work longer hours and the customers will not get the same level of service they normally do due to being short staffed.

One of her hispanic employees did not take the day off to march last week. She said other hispanics looked down on her and told her they were disappointed because she chose to work.

Oh...and personal rant here...one of my fiancee's customers was talking to her about the marching situation. The customer said he felt all the people that were no call/no show on that date should be fired, if that is what the policy of the business is in that situation. My fiancee did not agree NOR did she disagree - she merely changed the topic. One of her hispanic employees overheard this conversation and reported her to her district manager. The employee said my fiancee was RACIST because she did not immediately stand up and disagree with the customer. Let's see...if she said yes, she agreed, then she is being racist...if she says no, I disagree, she is arguing with a customer...so she chose the only other option, not saying anything - and STILL gets accused of being racist! AND the district manager rips her a new one for the whole thing - mainly because he is probably scared of repercussions coming his way if he didnt!

OK, I can understand if you don't want to name the name of the company. But, can you give clues? Is it a food establishment? A clothing establishment? Is it in the mall? Is it downtown? Is it on Earp? I would like to know a little something about the store if possible.

Radio Guy, that’s just another example of why so many of us are sick and tired of hearing that word “racist”. Most of the time the biggest racist is the one doing the name calling.

Do you know what a bar of soap party is?

Land of the Free Home of the Brave

What happened the the "Land of the Free?" America was founded as a place where freedom meant just that. Freedom to express an opinion WITHOUT fear of persecution.

Its really sad that as Americans we are not allowed to speak our minds without a fear of repercussions from not only fellow Americans but visitors as well. She should have been able to speak her mind without fear that some customer tells her boss and her boss comes down on her.

Her opinion should be just that. Her opinion. And it should not reflect on the place of business. America has gotten where its people can't wait to complain when given a chance.

We go to insane lengths to make sure some illegal immigrant has the right to say and do whatever they want but we don't dare let an American speak their mind.
