When you lie and say "I am on my way to vote" when you really aren't, knowing full well that the excuse will give you preferential treatment, then yes, you did ask for preferential treament.

A family tradition: yet another Kennedy has trouble on the road

THE curse of the Kennedys has stuck again. This time no one was hurt and no one was charged with anything, but, as so often with the Kennedys, it involved transport.

Patrick Kennedy, the son of Senator Edward Kennedy and nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy, is a congressman from Rhode Island. Washington police say he was driving at 2.45am with his lights off when he narrowly missed a police car then hit a security barricade.

The Capitol Police union said Mr Kennedy appeared to be intoxicated. "The driver exited the vehicle and he was observed to be staggering."

Mr Kennedy told them "he was a congressman and was late to a vote". The House of Representatives had adjourned nearly three hours earlier, so that was undoubtedly true.

More seriously, the police union alleges the police were instructed by an official "above the rank of patrolman" to drive Mr Kennedy home. He did not take a sobriety test.

The congressman issued a statement after the story broke, saying: "I was involved in a traffic accident last night. I consumed no alcohol prior to the incident. I will fully co-operate with the Capitol Police in whatever investigation they choose to undertake."

In a later statement he blamed his driving on medication. He said he was taking Phenergan, for gastroenteritis, and Ambien, a sleeping aide known in Australia as Stilnox.

"Some time around 2.45am, I drove the few blocks to the Capitol complex believing I needed to vote. Apparently, I was disoriented from the medication," he said.

In the 1980s Mr Kennedy spent time at a drug rehabilitation clinic, and has been open about his mental health issues, including a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

Mr Kennedy has had a bad run lately. His last traffic accident was just three weeks ago, when he struck an oncoming car when turning into a chemist's car park in Providence, Rhode Island.

And he got hit in the mouth with a hammer while watching a demonstration at a trade show. Even six stitches failed to get him much sympathy, with one blogger writing: "From hit with hammers to driving hammered."

His father, Edward, had his presidential aspirations ruined by a car accident after a party on Chappaquiddick Island in which his companion, Mary Jo Kopechne, died. He was criticised for leaving the scene and not immediately calling police.

Patrick's cousin, Joseph Patrick Kennedy, son of Robert, was in a car accident in which a female passenger suffered spinal injuries.

President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 while travelling in an open-topped limousine. His son, John, was killed in a plane crash in 1999.

Patrick was once quoted as saying, "I don't need Bush's tax cut. I have never worked a f---ing day in my life." Despite this, he has been re-elected ever since he entered Congress in 1994.

It is used for the treatment of nausea and motionsickness, read your link a little farther down. And it makes one sleepy to the point one would not need ambien.

Regardless the rich and powerful aren't like the rest of us in many ways, this is just another example.

Who the hell cares WHY he took any drugs????........ He's voting on issues that affect those that elected him and he's admittingly impaired. As a nurse when I'm impaired - I admit it, go get tx and come back........ON PROBATION

Even an idiot druggie knows ya don't mix phenergan and ambien. This feller knows his drugs and prob got coaxed on the story anyhow. He's impaired, has been impaired for some time, and now needs tx...... GREAT.......... there would be a "sober" nurse to take my spot......... I wanna know where the "sober" politician is for him?

If I lived in RI - I'd sure a heck be lookin for his replacement.

Don't go to the Bush, Rush, etc nonsense....... they are not elected officials that are casting votes that sway my future............ he is held to a higher standard just like he should be......... He's got his retirement in his pocket now - it only takes an election win to do that. He needs to go concentrate on being "sober for LONG periods of time"

I wish him well, I'm not surprised, I'm sure he really is ill - mentally and physically (by his own admission - 88) and I don't think he should be shielded by his daddy or the higher ranking state capitol police. It's a shame and a disgrace and HE alone created the situation......... he needs to "pay his tab" and stay away from the pharmacies, and the bars........... neither of those drugs - even combined make ya "smell" like booze...........sorrry

Liberals don't care....he's a Kennedy and he will get re-elected because they feel sorry for him and will blame his problems on society and shy away from individual responsibility. Hell the Libs re-elected Marion Barry after he was caught on tape smoking crack with a whore....it's their state of mind. Well that's only some of the reasons I don't vote straight ticket for either party. I know Repub. have been bad too. I'm sure some Dem on here could tell me all the horror stories.

I just think it's time to expect more from BOTH sides and in the middle. I think it's time politicians be men / women of honor. Hell the rest of us are tryin and they should be no execption. I want a job where I can do anything and get away with it........ plus have a nice fat retirement for goin to Washington and basically goin back on everything I promised. I would be ashamed to show my face. I'm tired of the excuses and the dances. It' just time to hold them to the fire like our bosses do us. I agree the black population keeps sending him back and look what he's given them.......S**T for a community. Some of his power was taken away here while back because of his inability to lead.
