TOPEKA, Kan. -- Kansas lawmakers have voted to set a minimum marriage age.
Gov. Kathleen Sebelius requested the legislation. Once she signs it, no one under 15 can get married in the state. It also sets strict limits for brides and grooms under the age of 18.
A 15-year-old could marry only if a district judge decided it was in the minor's best interest. Sixteen- and 17-year-olds face other conditions.
Kansas currently has no minimum age for marriage if the minor has parental or judicial approval.
Last year, a pregnant 14-year-old from Nebraska drove to the state to marry her 22-year-old boyfriend. He's now serving time for having sex with the minor.
The Kansas House approved the measure 119-0. It passed the Senate 36-4.
