Trumbo sent a letter to Mexican President Vicente Fox recently asking for $318,843, the amount he says it cost his county to jail 360 illegal immigrants last year for offenses from domestic violence to murder.

“I didn't expect this to be as big as it has gotten,” he said. “I'm finding all over that people are just tired of it. They're tired of schools and hospitals being overloaded by people that can't pay.”

“Each time an illegal immigrant from Mexico was booked into our jail, we were forced to release local prisoners to make bed space available. My priority is the safety and security of citizens of Umatilla County,” Trumbo wrote in his letter, which he sent to county commissioners; Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski; Sen. Gordon Smith; Rep. Greg Walden; and the media.

Lucy Veliz, who served on the Oregon Commission on Hispanic Affairs, said she agreed with the letter. “We don't have enough room for U.S. citizens, let alone undocumented people,” she said.
