Composting dumped from DC center plans


Critics not dissuaded, however, still fear site will smell

DODGE CITY - The developer of a controversial plan to build a recycling center and composting complex on the edge of Dodge City has dropped the composting element of the proposal, at least at the site under consideration.


"We'll work on the permits for that later on," said Dennis Hernandez, who heads the Ashland-based business spearheading the proposal, Kansas Waste Recovery. "Right now we're just going to let it go by the wayside."

The turn of events hasn't dissuaded critics, however. Lowell Brakey says with or without a composting site, a particular point of contention, the proposed site just outside southwest Dodge City is in the wrong place.

"It's still garbage. It's still going to smell," said Brakey, who's helping circulate petitions aimed at stalling the project.
