| Almost a disaster! At least the crops aren’t lost! I was worried. Chile crop escapes Hatch flood Source: KRQE News 13 HATCH, N.M. -- This is harvest time for New Mexico's signature crop green chile, a lot which comes from water-logged Hatch. And chile lovers know too much water can ruin a crop, but the word from Hatch is that they can rest easy. The chile farmers KRQE News 13 spoke with said not many fields were flooded. Farmer Oscar Ramos said most of the flooding was confined to the village of Hatch while most of the fields outside of town were spared. One or two fields were hit hard, but overall Ramos said this year's crop won't be affected. “Compared to last year, I would say definitely a lot better,” Ramos said. “Just the size, and we weren't hit with disease, so it’s doing very well.” Even though Hatch itself may be under water, chile stands were up and running and selling the precious commodity today. One stand was even delivering free chile burritos to rescue workers In the chile fields that were flooded, farmers are pumping out the water and trying to salvage the crop. http://www.krqe.com/expanded.asp?ID=16737
