I find it funny how the true issues, (i.e. the BootHill Bail out and the jail and others), are delivered in that always all too familiar SEC wrapping paper.

| gunnar1073, First of all, the C.F.A.B. must make a proposal to the city commission concerning the building of the S.E.C. This has not happened! Why? Why is the C.F.A.B. dragging their feet? Are they afraid of something? Heck, the W.N.D. fund has over $11,000,000.00 sitting in the bank. It's about time we start spending it. Don't you think? I'm saying we have so much money sitting around, why not do something with it. If we start the building of the S.E.C. we then can use W.N.D. sales tax money to bail out Boot Hill and continue on with the other projects as well. (Donald Innes, the judge, even said so) Last edited by Mike B.; 08-20-2006 at 01:54 AM. |

Frankly, Boot Hill sucks. It isn't worth saving in its current form. I am all for supporting cultural institutions, but Boot Hill is boring and hokey. Friends who have come to visit us from other states don't even care about going there. If you want to start building some sort of special events center, make it something that will attract tourism. If not, why bother? We already have the Civic Center - why do we need an SEC? If the city put all that money it has sitting around into truly revising the tourism industry in this town, then we wouldn't have to worry about saving old shitty ones. If you build it, they will come -- but only if it's to something worth building. |

| Not to be argumentative but - what would you replace Dodge City's claim to fame with? DC history is Boot Hill and the cattle trails, the gunslingers, the buffalo hunters. I realize there is a financial issue and a major one at that. My question is - what' your history worth? Is it something you are willing to abandod cause it's out of date with the folks that are there now? I think towns that can be the "keepers" of the stories and paths should do so if possible. If it's not possible - and it may not be - what would Dodge hang it's hat on? A taco stand? I think to hold history for future generations is a privilege - I also think that one issue is folks just wanna know where the money is goin. It seems it's not Boot Hill they are so angry about it's the management. I think a city so rich in history is just layin down to the "me , me, me" generation and that is a very sad development. If the parents of our parents had thought more about "me" and less about future generations there would be no history. I don't think any generation has the right to destroy and bury where we came from - that is the epitomy of selfishness. I think a mere accountability of funds and some revamp of admin perhaps could help. Boot hill should be a labor of love! It may be boring to some but sometimes that's becuase they are more interested in where THEY came from, rather than where they are - there's often no investment.

| I have loved Kansas sence I moved there, with husband when he was stationed at McConnell...way way back...then years later, many many transfers and a divorce... and a remarriage... my second I LOVE YOU TRUELY...transplanted me to SW Ks.... I however didn't appreciate the rich history til they had that longhorn drive a few years back...now that was awesome... I had always loved cowboys, as a child and growing up...movies... serials on Saturday afternoon...some of you know what I mean..and then on T-wee...so I already had a fondness most of my life..and guess what ... most Europeans and Asians, still to this day...absolutly worship the cowboy way.. I hope, someone with alot of bucks and a love for history...rides in and saves the whole place...we need the Donald..or the Bill...or King of Kuwait..(now theres an Idea )... really tho... Casinos would do well I think... to bring in fundage... via tourism.... but make the whole place COWBOY HEAVEN...not just Boothill.... The smell of cowshit ..after a rain...now thats nostalgic.. I think I will send a letter to KING FAHUUD...(is that his name ???) whats really sad..... in f**ked up South Carolina... someone would ask where I moved there from...I would ask if they had heard of Dodge City...and most replied no...........OMG....

| I think there is a way out - but I fear the folks runnin the place are just worried bout havin a job right now. That's kinda sad - We have lots of historic place in Galveston - they have tours, receptions, banquets, weddings, ets....... most these places have folks that volunteer thier time to the antebellum homes and such cause of thier love for the archetecture and actually just the plain "history" of the south and of Galveston when in it's hey day - it was the Wall Street of the south. Galveston was for a while the capitol of Texas. Houston was still a speck on Buffalo Bayou. It was swamp. The only thing that made Houston was the extension of the ship channel to Houston. Before that Galveston was the only port. DC was a big part of the migration to the west and the was the life line for Texas cattle ranchers. If it weren't for Dodge there woulda been no NY Strips, Kansas City would have been beggin for beef and IMHO the expansion to the west by farmers and civilization in general just wouldn't have taken place like it did. DC is the place dreams were made of. Just sad to lose that history. I'm with you Sapphire - I don't know the answer - I'm just glad tho that I don't rely on the Boot hill paid staff to take care of my families history. I don't think they would do it out of love. Course perhaps they have great ideas but no cash. I think Wichita has the right idea and shame on DC for not makin Boot Hill more of a positive things that really inspires folks to get involved. The times I helped with events at Boot Hill it seemed to me the staff there really loved the place - but I do feel they are overwhelmed and the imagination factor is lacking based on thier current path. Surely not every problem is solved by just throwing money at it. It takes - buy in and ownership in a non monitary way. After that the fever is contagious and the money then follows.
