Equality coalition to meet in Meade; Phelps to protest

The Kansas Coalition for Equality plans to have its state board's monthly meeting at the Lakeway Hotel in Meade on Sunday.

The meeting will start at 1 p.m.

The Rev. Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church will demonstrate at the hotel beginning at noon.

The hotel has gained international attention for flying a rainbow flag, which is a symbol of gay rights. The owners say the flag was a gift from their son.

Phelps' group also plans to protest at five Meade churches starting at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The coalition's meeting is open to the public and will take place in the hotel's ballroom. The coalition's mission is to fight discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Meade Police Chief Loren Borger said several extra law enforcement officers, including 16 Kansas Highway Patrol troopers, will be on duty Sunday because of the protests.

MEADE - This quiet town turned into an unlikely flashpoint in the gay rights movement Sunday, with picketers from the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church facing off against a contingent of rainbow-flag wearing gay rights activists and their backers.

The events - which stem from the controversy caused by a local hotel operator's decision to fly a rainbow flag outside his business - unfolded without incident. But they made for an atypical display in this small farming community of 1,600, best known as the hideout back in the late 1880s for the notorious Dalton brothers gang of bank robbers.

I always thought there was more to this story than was being said and from what I'm hearing it was true.

From what I've heard the hotel owner(s) son is gay and the town knew it. The flag was being flown as promoting gay rights and the rest of the town didn't like it.

I don't know but I did talk with someone from the area that shed some light on the situation. At least from his point of view.

He said this issue has been going on before any flag was raised. He said they were a small community and although they don't have a problem with gay people they didn't like the idea of Meade being a gay community.

Local kids were starting to hangout at the hotel because of nothing else to do and the few visitors they get were getting the idea Meade was a gay community. The hotel had become a "gay boutique" and hanging the flag to advertise was the last straw.

It's a flag!! Too bad they all couldn't get this worked up when our own flag was bein humbled(and still is) to the mexico flag!!

I took it as "he" meaning the son but it could have been another son or the owner I suppose.

From what I got is the flag was put up after some locals voiced concerns about what what going on at the hotel.

That is exactly why I think RUMOR sucks........... this kid is 12!!! How vicious can the fine christians of Meade be??? Proves my stance on religion....... and the fine "christian" folks that proclaim to be religeous. I still say they need a few Texas bull dykes!!
