Anti-Bush shirt OK in school, court says

Source: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14599244

Quote:
MONTPELIER, Vt. - A middle school that censored the anti-drug, anti-Bush message on a student's T-shirt violated the boy's right to free speech, an appeals court ruled Wednesday.

The shirt bore images of cocaine and a martini glass — in addition to messages calling President Bush a lying drunk driver who abused cocaine and marijuana, and the "chicken-hawk-in-chief" who was engaged in a "world domination tour."

Zachary Guiles, then a seventh-grader, wore the shirt once a week for two months in early 2004 and refused to cover the images after a parent and student complained. He was suspended for one day that May, and the next day wore the shirt with duct tape covering the images.
Sad. And we wonder why we need to dress of students like inmates and have a full-time police officer(RSO) on campus.

I'm all for standing up for your rights, but again, the responsibility that goes along with ones "rights" have been pass by.

The difference between knowing your rights, and knowing when to use them.

I'm sure he will get plenty of applause for showing a lack of responsibility.

Spin it as you like but this is a first amendment issue and nothing more.

The First Amendment isn't needed to protect popular speech.

As I said, it's no wonder our future is so bleak when people only see this as a "first amendment issue and nothing more."

Yes it is your first amendment right to offend as many people as you see fit as long as it's within the law. Heaven forbid we should also teach them anything else. Not as if we got enough liberals as it is.

A college student I could see.
A high schooler... eh.
But a 14 year old middle school kid? This kid either has some serious social issues or really screwed up parents. Or both.

We'll really see problems when our preschoolers start abusing the constitution.

Spin? Spin? Looks more like an observation to me. It’s like the guy that got kicked off an airplane because his T-shirt had something written in Arabic on it. Freedom of speech, yes. Smart thing to do, no. Just because you like what it says doesn’t mean that everywhere in an appropriate place to say it and not every opinion different from your’s is spin.

Now what I would call spin is your post here. You post political satire /comedy as news and then get all pissy because we see it for what it is instead of believing a doctored video is fact. And before you go into your usual “head in the sand” or “can’t think for yourself” BS I’d like to point out that most of your remarks sound like they were copy/ pasted straight from the left-wing blogs that I’ve seen. Talk about group-think, you lefties just repeat each other over and over again. Maybe you’ve been spinning so much it made you dizzy.

Pissy?

Methinks he doth protest too much.

I only pointed out those videos spoke for themselves and you righties said every one of those things after it was spoon fed to you. When it was proven wrong you opened up and swallowed the next batch they fed you.

If anyones' gettin pissy little missy it's you.

And you know what?

I'm loving EVERY second of it so please do go on.

You guys sould each order your own sit and spin because that's pretty much everything your administration is doing. Sit in one spon and spin as fast as they can hoping nothing sticks.

I can see it now

Billy, remember all the stuff about sharing your toys and being nice to the other kids you were taught years ago? Well that was all crap. The fact is you have the constitutional right to be a jerk. So you put on that I Love Freddy Phelps tee shirt with God Hates Fags on the back and wear it to school. If anyone complains we'll take it to the courts.
