NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Country singer-songwriter Willie Nelson and several fellow musicians were charged with misdemeanor drug possession by Louisiana police after a search of their tour bus on Monday turned up marijuana and psychedelic mushrooms.

State police spokesman Willie Williams said the bus was stopped early on Monday morning about 7 miles east of Lafayette, Louisiana, for a routine commercial inspection, and a state trooper smelled marijuana inside the bus.

State Police seized about 1-1/2 pounds (0.7 kg) of marijuana and two-tenths of a pound (91 grams) of mushrooms from the bus, Williams said.

Nelson and four other passengers on the bus were cited for possession and released, while the driver had his commercial driving privileges suspended in addition to being cited for possession. Nelson faces possible jail time of up to six months and an unspecified fine, police said.

"There was no trouble whatsoever," Williams said. "They were all cooperative."

A spokesman for Nelson said she had no information about the arrest.

Nelson, 73, has been an advocate for the legalization of marijuana. He became famous in the 1970s as part of the outlaw country movement that included influences from rock, jazz and folk music.

Everyone should get a pass on pot. The *war* on drugs has been an overt failure. Legislate it like alcohol and tax the crap outta it and would eliminate a whole lot more problems than it causes.

I had a guy walk into my office in Dodge and try to convince me he was a security expert and that I really needed to hire him. He claimed to be a former g-man and was "intimately" involved in the Nelson's first arrest. While no big fan of Nelson, I told the man I thought he should find a better career event to brag on and politely asked him to leave.

Awww........Willie~! I am a big fan of Willie's! Poor guy! I heard he got stoned in the White House once. He's a great man and people could learn a lot from him!!!

Poor Willie - there goes Kinky's guy for energy!! Oh well - the law is for everyone - even Willie - wether it's just willie or slick willie - no one deserves a free pass - specially on drugs. It it were legal - (which wouldn't change my useage habits since I outgrew that years ago) it wouldn't matter.

He don't care much none tho, he's buyin all the property in and around Abbot (his home town) - he's got somethin else smokin besides shrooms and pot. Maybe he was gonna grow both in his own town.......... oh well - I'm with Hw - he knows better!

If some joker walked into my office that I didn’t call and wanted me to hire him for security I’d throw him out too regardless of who he claimed to have busted.

Why don't they just leave the old f----r alone, and let him git "On the road again"!! So, it is illegal to have mushrooms??? Psychadelic, does that mean they glow in the dark?? Jeeze, guess I better take my stash of shrooms back to Dillons for a refund?? But they go so good on "Psychadelic Pizza"!!!!

Although it may be illegal, im not in favor of it being illegal. Pot (in my mind) is just as bad..if not worse than alcohol. To tell the truth i'd say it is worse than alcohol...i've never seen a person who is stoned outta there mind try to pick a fight with anyone. A piss drunk person on the other hand yes. They say marijuana is the gateway drug...my ass. Alcohol is the REAL gateway drug...ban it.
