Don't fall for it.

Today's editorial from the HutchNews

Quote:
Gates is one to watch

His nomination could signal shift in Iraq policy

There will be a lot of piling on in coming days over Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's forced departure (lurker edit: Did the Commander in Chief say it was forced?) from the Pentagon.

Those who have called for Rumsfeld's resignation in recent months run the gamut from top military brass to Sen. Hillary Clinton.

The 2006 election season saw many candidates use the war in Iraq as a campaign issue. And Tuesday's results - which gave Democrats control of Congress - was perceived both as a call for President George W. Bush to change course and for Rumsfeld's resignation.

But the most telling sign that Rumsfeld had become a liability the administration no longer can afford came earlier this week in an editorial in the Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times that called for Rumsfeld's ouster.
..............

Clearly, Tuesday's national election results and the editorial in (cough-cough) military newspapers put the Bush administration on notice that a majority of Americans no longer want to "stay the course" in Iraq.
Anywhoo, forced or not isn't the issue I have with that piece. The Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times are all owned & published by those fine folks who also own & publish USA Today: Gannett Company - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That editorial would have you believe those rags are official military publications, or sumpt'n like that. Don't fall for it.

Army, what's your opinion of those "times" publications?

Here's what I see commin - Before the election GW didn't have a brain and couldn't do anything to please them........ After the election GW still won't have a brain and all his non pleasing ideas will be because of them. It's all politics. GW told us this was in the works before the election but not solid till the day before the election. That isn't lying (as reported by some) that is catch 22 - damed if ya do damned if ya don't (tell)........ Now Rummy's departure was all "thier idea"......... who cares? GW ain't gonna get any credit for his brains for the next 2 years. Don't seem to bother him none - so far he has been the MVP of this inning

The Army times is NOT an official military publication at all. In fact we don't keep the times in our recruiting station. It is a publication of "news of the Army" (or whatever svc you are, respectively) but it is in NO way, shape or form an official military publication. It's a news device just like the USA today or any other media.

I think Rummy resigned because he knew what was coming. He probably would have been forced out at some point. He knew he was going to be in the crosshairs of the liberal sniper rifle. Instead of going through a long arduous, finger pointing, name calling (libs like to do that) process he just stepped down. Now he can go hunting...with Dick. LOL

It’s funny how a change in staff always gets the rumor mill churning with speculation on motives. Recently someone (I can’t remember who) retired and said he just wanted to spend more time with his family and the media went nuts trying to guess the real political motive. Sometimes they may have issues like a family member being ill that they don’t want made public. I believe Rummy held that job longer than anyone else. Enjoy your retirement Rummy and thank you for your service.

I’d rather hunt with Dick than ride with Ted.
