| Dried Distllers Grain is highly sought after as a feedstuff for beef cattle. An ethanol plant will also drive up the price of local grain, which in turn makes the DDG desirable as an alternative to the more expensive corn or milo. |

| Big Meeting tonite with the zoning board on the proposed alcohol plant. Joe Bogner and Pete Weil had letters in the paper last week promoting the plant. Bob Wetmore in todays paper, also promoting the plant. I agree that it would be good for our tax base, granted they don't give them "tax abatements" like they do most of the time. However, it will be "water intensive", no matter what the promoters say. Since Dodge City has to run water to Wright now, where is the water coming from? Also, there could be other problems, but the main ones that concern me are: 1) They MUST use local suppliers and local contractors, which I doubt will happen. 2) They Must hire LOCAL AMERICAN CITIZENS. 3) They Must use LOCAL companies for maintenance and operation. As per Mr. Wetmore's comment that there will be no waste effluent, that is not true. The water leaving the plant, whether through discharge or irrigation, will be highly concentrated water containing minerals, caustics, acids, and other contaminants. The volatiles, Wetmore says 100 tons of regulated emmisions, as a "minor source"! Depends on what the emissions are composed. 100 tons is alot of anything! The "truck traffic" issue also needs to be clarified. 1,000 commercial vehicles on Wyatt Earp are way too many now. When will we get smart and complete the bypass? Liberal and Garden City have already completed theirs, and they don't let the trucks congest the town and destroy the streets. There goes the "new street construction" on Wyatt Earp again!! "Facts" are sometimes based on the "so called experts" rather than real, concrete information. I am not against this plant or economic development, if it does not hurt our local resources, our local businesses, our local infrastructure, or our health and quality of life. We have had things shoved down our throats too many times in this area with promises, and then found out that we got "screwed" again! I urge any concerned citizens to attend the meeting tonite at 7 pm in the Rose Room at the Ford County Government Center. |

| To coin the old ACDC song, "Money Talks"!! There are some strange things about this deal----------Oh well, I hope it was worthwhile and prospers. |

| Welperz, I read this in the early morning and it didn't make sense. I thought about it during the day and it didn't make sense. I returned to it this evening and struggled with trying to define who gets what money, who "generates" money (referenced as the State generating revenue???), what money is abated (referenced as 'tax breaks' costing governmental agencies) and simply haven't figger'd out just what Tim Vandenack's wanting to say.... Can anyone explain this to me: Quote:

| Beats the crap outta me, Lurker? I thought they were not going to get a "tax abatement", rather they were getting a Development Grant? Well, we will probably get again as usual! Just like I said before the Zoning Hearing! |

| Gota give him his props though....one thing he is good at is working the system and stickin it to the powers that be. If I was trying to stop the powers, I would want him on my side.

| As I said before, I don't oppose the plant, but if it is going in, it should be done properly and with LOCAL personnel and suppliers. I have read several articles on this and on other plants. Saw one the other day that said the supply of grain in this area won't support it and feed yards too. It will cause the price of obtaining grain to increase, which in turn makes more demand for growing corn in the area. Corn requires a lot of irrigation, so besides the plant consuming precious water, the extra corn requirement will also require extra water. Also read some articles on the increase in tax revenue from these type of plants, and that looks pretty good, unless we give them all these tax breaks. Sooner or later someone has to pay the taxes to support all of the local government. If they keep giving tax breaks to everyone, then who is going to pay the taxes--------------guess who!! Guess we will just have to see how this plays out. |
