Congress open to passing bill on immigration*-*Nation/Politics*-*The Washington Times, America's Newspaper

Congress open to passing bill on immigration
By Charles Hurt
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
December 4, 2006

Congress will approve an immigration bill that will grant citizenship rights to most of the 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens in the U.S. after Democrats take control next month, predict both sides on Capitol Hill.
While Republicans have been largely splintered on the issue of immigration reform, Democrats have been fairly unified behind the principle that the illegals currently in the country should get citizenship rights without having to first leave the country.
"Years of dawdling have worsened our border security and made it harder to fix this broken system," said Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, the Vermont Democrat who will lead the Judiciary Committee next year. "We should not let partisan politics and intolerance continue to delay and derail effective reform." INTOLERANCE? of what..criminals...
Democrats in both chambers say they will start with some form of legislation first drafted by Sens. John McCain, Arizona Republican, and Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat, which was the basis for the bill that was approved earlier this year by the Senate.
"This past May, the Senate Judiciary Committee reported and then the Senate passed bipartisan versions of comprehensive immigration reform to bring people out of the shadows while strengthening our borders," Mr. Leahy said. "I look forward to building on that work next year and making progress on a bipartisan effort that improves security, supports our economy and respects the dignity of all people."
House Republicans and many outside Congress derided that bill as "amnesty" for allowing illegals to remain in the U.S. and eventually become citizens. Democrats say it's not amnesty because aliens must pay a fine and wait years before becoming citizens.
"The Senate bill is pure amnesty," said Rep. Jack Kingston, Georgia Republican. "Dress it up any way you want, it's still amnesty. It lets people pay their way out of sneaking into the country illegally."
With President Bush as an ally in the White House, he worries, Democrats will proceed next year with legislation to ultimately make citizens out of most of the illegals now in the country. And Republicans, still reeling from deep losses in the November elections, will give up the fight.
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, California Republican, said he expects an immigration-reform bill that doesn't deport illegal aliens to be the only significant legislation to come out of the new Democratic Congress and win Mr. Bush's approval.
"The only real legislation that can be expected from Congress is amnesty," he said. "If they come up with a plan and the president is behind it, it will pick up a lot of our own members."
Republicans also expressed little confidence that their leadership team is committed to blocking amnesty.
The group Americans for Better Immigration, which supports tougher immigration policies, has given Republican leaders mixed grades on the issue. But on the issue of amnesty, the grades have been much worse

Well I hate to say I told you so but!

We all know the majority of Americans don't want the amnesty bill, and when the right was in charge, even though the leader wanted it, the peoples voice was heard.

Except by our own Sen. Sam "I Love Illegal's" Brownback. I read yesterday where he now wants to take a run for the White House in '08. All I have to say is ANYBODY but Brownback!!! He also is pushing for churches to become political yet keep there tax-exempt status. I think that is a crock of sh!t too.

Census: Hispanics now majority in Seward Co.

Numbers further evidence that demographic changes continue in western Kansas

By Tim Vandenack

The Hutchinson News

tvandenackAThutchnews.com

Hispanics are now the majority in Seward County, while minorities - notably Latinos - have replaced non-Hispanic whites as the majority in Ford County, according to U.S. Census Bureau population estimates for 2005.

"No it's not a surprise. It should not be a surprise for anybody," said Enrique Rodriguez Franz, an AM-radio host in Liberal who's active in Seward County's Latino and Anglo communities. Hispanic growth in Seward County has been "absolutely insane."

Still, the numbers underscore the rapidly changing demographics in southwest Kansas, a magnet since the 1980s and 1990s for Mexicans and other Hispanic immigrants seeking jobs in the zone's meatpacking plants. And some say they suggest the unrealized political might of the zone's Latinos, who have stayed mainly on the political sidelines.

The numbers don't equate to political influence, so now Latinos "need to be part of the democratic process," said Robert Vinton, a board member of the Regional Latino Affairs Council, a Dodge City-based advocacy group.

Again, I believe the American voter has underestimated the low at which politicians can go. American voters sent the message we are tired of our leaders not listening to our wants but I fear even two years of the left in power will prove a mistake.

The only thing a politicians fears is loosing power. Even now they(left) are working to ensure a continued place of power by adding another 20 million voters.

Yeah...AMERICANS are tired of our leaders...but in a few months the definition of AMERICAN will change....Once we add another 20 million criminals..the next phase for the Dems once they are citizens under amnesty will be getting them to the voting booth. It's scary!

You are right about that Army. The sad thing is that current Americans are complacent when it comes to voting and they don't take their voting rights seriously, resulting in poor turnout.

History has proven where countries are liberated and earn a newfound right to voting, turnout is huge.

Can you imagine what will happen when former illegals are granted the newfound right to vote? You can bet they will exercise it. I fear the turnout for a once silenced group will be overwelming, resulting in a huge number of pro-latino entitlement legislation on the backs of the current tax base. And you can bet they will show loyalty to the party that ushers them in. The dems know this and that is why they have forsaken their current constituent base.

Scary times indeed!
