Last I heard a "local" don't make the decisions of what gets put in the paper. They have a committment to AP stories and the such (Ithink). Then there's that pesky advertising dollar that (also from my memory) keeps the paper printing. Used to be more attention was given to that than to actual stories. Stories had to fit in and around other obligations. It's hard to bite the hand that feeds ya and advertising seems to be that hand. Perhaps things have changed........... but a subscription wont' print as many newspapers as an advertiser. I know they go hand in hand but I always wished the balance could be looked at just a little.

I still say they are the only game in town - they have managed to survive when many other small town papers have folded or been absorbed (like ours). Be happy you don't have to read Garden's paper for your local events.

We no longer have a Texas City paper - we have The Galveston county news. They found all the local papers were not needed. I think LaMarque used to have a weekly paper but not sure if that's around anymore. Our size far exceeds ya'll so it could very well be worse. Maybe a few tweaks would be nice for the readers of the Globe but that desire isn't anything new. I don't see a lot of scurrien to shake things up. Globe seems to run with the "it ain't broken" premise and it seems to have worked so far. Truth is maybe they need some "off the payroll" reporteers to submit some stories - never hurts to serve up to em what you would like to see if ya think what they are doin isn't enough.

In my former life it was a press release - worked quite well - sometimes I had to beg a little and kindness went a long way - we also spent advertising dollar with them - but wether we did or not a written human interest story is easier to edit than it is to write... all it takes is a fax.....

I think advent of the internet also affects the print media.

I hate to do this, but I gotta throw a plug in here for my 'other' hometown paper, the Newton Kansan. Small town paper, but it never fails to keep me informed on whats going on back in Newton. My favorite part, and one that I think the globe should think about doing, is the voices section where people just rant about things. It's interesting to see what's on the locals mind. Just in case you are interested, its TheKansan.com

Wifey has never seen the Plaza lights at Xmas so we're staying downtown tonight and eating dinner on the plaza. I think I'm going to take her to Mccormick and Schmidt's or Ruth's Chris Steakhouse...which do you prefer?

McCormick & Schmick's. Definitely. You'll enjoy the ambiance in there. Ruth's Chris is definitely over rated. Too stuffy. Have fun!
