| Look WHO is trying to save the membership. Meatpackers' union goes to court By The Associated Press Article Last Updated:12/12/2006 01:05:19 PM MST Immigration and Custom Enforcement police stand guard at the entrance of a Swift & Co. meat processing plant in Greeley, Colo., Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, during a raid. Federal agents raided meat processing plants in six states Tuesday and arrested an unknown number of suspected illegal immigrants in an identity theft investigation, temporarily suspending operations at all six plants. (AP Photo/Ed Andrieski) The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) immediately went to federal court this morning seeking a temporary injunction against federal agents who raided Swift & Co. packing plants in Greeley and five other states. "Essentially, the agents stormed the plants, many of them in riot gear, in an effort designed to terrorize the workforce," said Mark Lauritsen, director of the UFCW Food Processing, Packing and Manufacturing division. "This kind of action is totally uncalled for. "We are advising all the detained workers to exercise their right to an attorney and remain silent until they confer with counsel. These actions today by ICE are an affront to decency." |

| The fact of the matter is that Immigration Enforcement Officers have been trying to work with Swift since Feb. of 2006. Swift has deliberately thumbed their noses at the Feds. for some length of time. Government officials finally said enough is enough and dropped the hammer on Swift. Last night I spoke to a high-ranking gov't official who said it is very unlikely that other meat packing plants would be targeted. I think I.C.E. just wanted to show the packers (Swift) that they had had enough and wanted to send out a loud message to everyone else. |
