The original intent of my post was never to get in a pissing match with anybody on this board. Its intent was to point out other obsene uses of water that are going on, that nobody wants to seem to talk about. I have lived in this community for many years and have been dumbfounded by the overall lack of direction in search for new industry. Just because we are an agricultural based community, does not mean that we cannot attract other forms of skilled labor. The fact of the matter is that water is going to be the controlling issue in westen Kansas. The most extensive use of water in all of SW Kansas is irrigation. People really do not know how much water is pumped out of the ground for this purpose. But everyone has an opinion of one ethanol plant that is going pump us dry. I have long been a proponent of minimal irrigation to grow our existing crops. For one thing I believe it is the most ethical thing to do, plus it is the most economical thing to do. Eventually, water is going to get too expensive to pump, so the acres of corn will be affected, the feed lots will be affected, the packing plants will be affected. And yes the ethanol plants will be affected. Maybe the ethanol plant is not the economic panacea, but it is not a packing plant either. It provides a base for more skilled labor that this community is lacking. What this area needs is more skilled labor and the industry that goes along with that. Whether it is an ethanol plant, wind farms, or whatever. Eventually, the packing plants will leave Dodge, and what is going to be in its place to provide the economic base. I do have opinions just like everyone else, but I do have basis in fact for them to the best of my ability. I too listen to what is being said, but I try to ferret out the source. One last note on water and saving it. What are you (anybody reading this) doing to save your little piece of the aquifer? My hot button issue is, do your automatic sprinklers water half of the street, run in the rain, do you turn them off when they are not needed? I know it is a small amout of water in relation to the other issues that we are talking about, but none the less just as valid. |
