| Water is rationed now in Kansas. Buying water rights from irrigated farm fields is the current ploy.

An ethanol plant takes HUGE amounts of water for their process. The plant will eventually cause a shortfall in corn and then our wise farmers will start growing corn again in the area which also takes HUGE amounts of water to grow. The ethanol plant is being built for one purpose...GREED. The company is after the quick buck because there presently is a demand for ethanol because some people think they are doing the environment a favor by using it. They also get a big tax break from the government. What happens when the tax breaks and the water dry up? They close shop and leave town after raping our local natural resources.

| The absolute ignorance of some of my fellow citizens about how much water the ethanol plant is going to use is absolutely beyond me. Everyone keeps harping on the 330 million gallons of water that the ethanol plant is going to uses every year, of which 25 percent is going to be used again for irrigation. That is roughly a net water use for the ethanol plant of 250 million gallons. And of that 110 million gallons is actually turned into something. Let us look at a few other things in the area that seem to be just hunky dory, or at least nobody will talk about it. Just how much water does EXCEL use every year. Water which is extremely polluted when it leaves the plant and has no other use. Conservatively I believe that they use at least 500 gallons per head times, what, 5000 head a day? Folks, that is 2.5 million gallons a day times 365 days in a year. By my calculator, that is 912,500,000 gallons a year for the one packing plant alone. Does anybody know how much say, a 40,000 head feedyard uses, just to water those cattle a year. Cattle drink about 10 to 15 gallons of water a day, a total of 400,000 gallons a day, 146,000,000 gallons a year at 10 gallons a day. That does not account for the overflow waterers that they use. What about a circle of corn that is irrigating at its full water right of 24 acre inches. That comes to about 83,000,000 gallons of water for one circle of corn. How many of those do we have around here. So you see, that 330 million gallons which is more than likely already being pumped, because there are no new water rights, is a small amount of the water that is used around this town. This is not to say that I am not concerned about water use and abuse, because I am very much so. I am much more concerned about the abuse of water than the justified use. Just open your minds a little more and realize that the ethanol plant is not going to be the end of us by itself. |
