It makes some of the hierarchy of the church hypocritical, not the Church's teachings. I have problems with that too, though, LG - it's just hard to come to grips with.

I agree wholeheartedly it's kind of a double edge sword and both sides are pretty damn sharp. But I do admire her for not aborting the baby just to keep her job. It'll be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Pregnancy is supposed to be the most beautiful thing in the world. Too bad hers is going to be marred by court hearings, etc. My thought? If the handbook said "don't mess around" and you did anyway, thinking it was none of their business - then you have nobody to thank but yourself. Get over it - move on. Most private schools pay their teachers less than public schools anyway. Methinks there's a civil rights attorney sharpening their claws for this battle.

Hey - maybe she didn't have sex to get pregnant.........Lots of options out there now......maybe it was "immaculate conception" at the clinic....... I'd stick with that story and sue the fire out of em........ she would have college for the kid paid for...............she needs to put her "thinkin" cap on......

You're right she may be better served to just get another job have her child and put this behind her.

I look at it like this, Is this an ethical or moral decision? Is she being a good role Model for these kids by being unwed and pregnant? Was she using common sence when she decided to have unprotected sex knowing theres a chance this all would happen?? I would answer No to the questions I just asked and say in conclusion that she brought this on herself for not making the right decisions or at least looking at the big picture. What was she thinking?? If I was a teacher in a Catholic school and got pregnant while not married I would expect them to fire me. Hell If I worked in any child care or school I would expect it to tell you the truth no matter what religion. I just think if your going to be in that kind of business you should set a good example. I am with you Muffin all the way on this.

I am very sure that the Church enjoys various tax exemptions (property taxes that support public schools within the property's district as an example) and that is a subsidy in its own right. Should the Church pay full bore taxes on every available taxation vehicle, then they can make and work their own rules.

Ya gotta follow carefully, because I lay this stuff out in my head and it doesn't always all make it to paper (screen). I seriously disagree with the way this is all being handled. It's not that I condone sweeping unwed pregnancy under the rug, it's just that I don't believe that shoving it in front of impressionable young children is right. Now, if a parent chooses to do that, that's their prerogative. I can't see parents paying tuition to a private school without being assured their children are in a moral environment.

It was in their handbook for God's sake! She knew it when she took the job, she knew it when she had sex with the guy and she knows it now. To take them to task at this late date is just making excuses for her.

Somebody somewhere has to make sense of this instead of jockeying around with laws.

It’s called conditions of employment. Like showing up on time, sober, etc.
