How's your flood insurance?

So I hear they're predicting a 2007 flood worse than the 1965 flood once the Colorado snow begins to melt. If this is the case I would say it's a good time for the people of south dodge to check their flood insurance.

An early spring rain over the show covered Arkansas river drainage could devastate this area.

The majority of the highlighted area in Colorado drains through Dodge City. There was an abundance of snowfall this month that can rapidly melt via a rain event.

From a letter to the Globe from Donald E. Shultz

Quote:
The National Weather Service has calculated the amount of water that will result from the snow melt in western Kansas and eastern Colorado in the Arkansas River Valley. It will not come upon us gently, but like the great millstone of the Apocalypse, it will slam into us like an avalanche.

The debris will cause the river to run wide and around the dikes as in 1965, only more so, and the churning logs will eat the dikes like pie crust. And we maybe have 60 days to cry for help.

Who is Donald E. Shultz? Why should we believe what he says? Is he the local lawyer that specializes in Estate Planning? If so, why would that make him knowledgable on snow melt and flooding?

Not exactly, Don. 42 years ago the riverbed had lots of standing timber that evenly collected the debris.

Thanks to irrigation, we now have lots of dead trees.
Thanks to the Fernal Gummit, we now have a clean riverbed... with dikes.

The net result is such that the old debris will whisk through their "flood control project" and collect just east of town; and build a damn dam that only a beaver could outdo.

It won't be as bad as NawLens saw but it will be very dynamic.

Flood?

An oldtimer, who said he has lived in this area for some 65 years, said it would never happen. He said times have changed, adding that, " THE CITY COMMISSION WOULD NEVER LET IN DODGE CITY".
