| The Biblical concept of "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" has often been thought of as mandatory; but it really was referring to 'no more than' an eye for an eye ..... I can think of no worse fate than complete and total isolation from contact with other living creatures....

| Re: The bleeding heart liberals forcing the soft treatment of prisoners: It wasn't that long ago that most prisoners did live in inhumane conditions. I worked for 3.5 years at the Larned State Hospital for the Criminally Insane back in the late 60s and yes, there were deplorable conditions. To wit, a cut off plastic bleach bottle to shit and piss in, and guards, er, aids, that would purposely screw with an inmate until he would blow, thus allowing us "aides" the opportunity to deal out a bit of "forced justice." So, changes were needed. However, the so-called radical changes seemed to be the rule, and they went too far. Damn that pendulum of reality, won't it ever stop in the middle? I visited LSH years later as a journalist, and was appalled at the "freedoms" given to those under the custody of the state for crimes. So, what's the solution? Remember, DNA evidence has cleared a few "murderers" and "rapists" of their crimes. So what, as long as it's not me or my friends, right? Jes wondering, my friends. |

| If our judicial system were ran like it is intended, there would be no innocent people in prison and time would fit crime. If labor unions and other groups would keep their hands out of things, prisons could and would be self sufficiant. It was a prison in Florida, if I remember correctly, that had a company come in and build a plant inside the prison. Inmates who qualified were trained in honest jobs within the plant and were payed actual wages not prison wages. The inmates were advanced in the company like any other worker and were allowed 10% of their income. The rest went to paying restitution and fines and to the inmates family. After being released from the prison those inmates who worked for the company continued to work for the company and were relocated to other plants. The recivatism (sic) rate was around 5% I believe. The reason it was pulled? Labor unions complained and others in the community felt the inmates were getting special attention. Our judicial system is not based upon punishment, it is based upon rehabilitation. Now you, I, and whomever may not like that but that is what it is. Prison is not intended for punishment, but the fact one is in prison is considered punishment, it is intended to keep criminals away from the public and give them a chance to rehabilitate themselves. If prisons could be run that way, they would actually work. Unfortunately, like you said Tex, there are loopholes upon loopholes which allow not only local governments to exploit them, but the inmates themselves to do the same.

| Dutch, I can’t argue with rehab because most of the folks in prison are going to get out sometime. And I do run my restitution checks to the bank with a smile knowing that little meth punk is reminded that he screwed with the wrong guy 5 years ago. But in the case of the Carr brothers it’s a waste of resources to give them anything because they should never get out, ever! They are the poster boys for repealing the cruel and unusual punishment clause. The trouble is they can only be killed once and I just can’t make up my mind which one way I’d pick.

| I can understand mistakes made years ago putting innocent people behind bars, but do we really have that problem today? There are so many loopholes in "beyond a reasonable doubt" exploited by lawyers I'm sure there are far more guilty people running free than innocent people being jailed. Our legal system sucks. Nothing burns my butt more than these criminals being released on technicalities. Again, no accountability. Here is my definition of stupid. We catch some killer on video and some lowlife lawyer gets him off because some cop screwed up collecting evidence. What can be any more stupid? Release the killer back on the streets to kill again because a mistake was made in due process. If that killer was caught on tape it should be case closed period. There is no doubt he is the killer so he should be held accountable for his actions period. If a cop screws up the investigation he/she should be held accountable but it should not relieve the criminal of their actions in the process. I don't care if the video was collected illegally and therefore inadmissible. If the video shows the crime they should do the time. I think accountability should also be put on lawyers and judges as well. It may just clean up this filthy legal buddy system we have. If a lawyer knows for sure his client is guilty and he gets him off to kill again, then the lawyer should be tried as an accomplice to the crime.
