Scam Targets Topekan

KSNT - Local News - Scam Targets Topekan

Meagan Farley

For four months now Verel Westover has been talking through phone calls and emails to a man in London named Norbert Wright , who claims to be an attorney.

“He said are you Verel Westover that lives in Topeka and I said yes. Then he asked if I own a business and I said yes, and it went on from there,” said Westover.

Norbert then broke the news to Verel that a family member named Craig Westover passed away and that he is the heir to a more than fifteen million dollar fortune. Verel said he does have an extended family member with that name, and now his bags are packed.

“He told me that it would be delivered to my account in the US or I could come get it. I chose to go get it. I wanted cash,” said Westover.

Verel says he isn't getting scammed because he hasn't given Norbert any Money, .but a closer look at the emails show they are requesting more than four thousand dollars for some sort of fee.

“I know this is real. I don't just think I know.”

One email even read.” You can stake anything on this it is foolproof. As soon as this document is secured the deposit is as good as ours. You have nothing to worry about.”

I’d suggest the guy plan a nice vacation in England and stop by Scotland Yard to discuss this before showing up for the meeting.

People want to believe so badly - and since this guy had a relative in England with the same name, somebunny did their homework. The problem is, the people that want to believe it so much are the same people that can ill-afford the effects. Make ya wanna cry, don't it?

He was on the news last night. I just couldn't believe how much he was buying into this. That type of scam has been going on for years and people still don't get it. The guy has been warned numerous times and if he loses his money he flat deserves it. Too bad but common sense has seemingly left and foolish pride mixed with greed has moved in.

Most people want everything given to them and they think they deserve it. Baloney!!

People need to work for what they get. Then they appreciate it. How many of the lottery winners are now broke and in deep doo doo. How about the people that are given inheritences (sic). They spend it like they didn't earn it. Exactly! I will never have to worry about that. I have no rich relatives.

Everybody wants something for nothing. Then they get scammed. No one DESERVES anything until they work for it.

I gotta agree. Look at the Anna Nicole Smith mess. If she were an everyday woman with an older son and a new baby and died, nobody would want the baby unless there was some support money comin' in. I wish there weren't "haves" and "have nots", but the fact is, there are and there's nothing you or I can do about it but work hard to stay in the middle somewhere.
