Arkansas River series of stories.

The HutchNews is running a Sunday series on the Ark River.

Quote:
"When you think about our water supply, most don't think about it in terms of hundreds of thousands of years," he said. "Most folks just turn on the faucet and they don't worry about it. But if you deplete it, it's gone."

For the next several Sundays, The (Hutchinson) News will focus on the Arkansas River, including depletion, conservation efforts, water quality and recreation. The first installment, published in today's paper, looks at the Upper Arkansas River and depletion issues.
A river used to run through it

Once a wide river, the Arkansas is dry in many areas

I hope they take to time to do some history of the Arkansas. Although at this time the Arkansas seems to be dead it hasn't changed all that much from the past. Like our weather, the Arkansas has it's dry times and wet times. Here is a reference to the Arkansas from the past.

From 1840's:
Quote:
Sometimes a little digging was required to find water in the river of any amount as it would be nearly dry.

Isn't there some statute or somethin that says if the riverbed hasn't had water (measureable) for so many years that it becomes the adjoining property? Up to so many feet? I heard that somewhere -

The Renick's near Charleston claimed their portion of the riverbed and were legally allowed to farm it. Sometimes the River taketh away.....

Yeah, but the Renick's had a long legal battle to win that farm ground. I dunno how long it'll take to recoup the money from farming the ground. And then lose it all as soon as the river starts flowing again. If they have it nearly leveled now, as I suspect, Dodge may never have a flood again - it'll flood in Charleston and never get that far!!
