CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Sentencing is May 24 in Corpus Christi for 14 people who pleaded guilty in an ID sale investigation.
Some defendants admitted selling their own birth certificates or other legitimate identification papers because they needed the money.
Court documents indicate the ID's were forwarded to Dodge City, Kansas, where illegal immigrants bought them.
The defendants are from Corpus Christi, Beeville, Falfurrias, Sinton, San Patricio and Mexico.
Each faces up to five years in prison.
They were charged with conspiring to use forged, counterfeit or other documents as proof of entry into the U.S. or for legal authorization to remain in America.
The judge yesterday asked each defendant why they chose to sell their ID's.
"I guess I wasn't mature enough to know what I was doing," 22-year-old Rosie Medellin of Taft said. |
