I know the gang problem today is much larger but just wanted to clear the air about not having gangs before the beef packers.
I remeber them!! We called them "pachucos" Tan kakki pants, greased hair slicked back, pointed shined shoes, white T shirts......... is that who you are talkin about?........... lord I didn't think many remembered them. Straight outta West Side Story! They used to be the "mexican mafia" in galveston but everyone called thme pachucos....... man - long time ago! Don't see them much any more! They would be a welcomed gang to deal with nowdays. They maily used razors and knives. Quieter that way and ya know they didn't really kill to many foks - seemed they wanted thier victims to talk and raise the fear level. Man - even gangs ain't what the used to be - kinda makes ya think they are takin the lazy way out........... just cap em........... who can spread the fear then???

GANGSTA RAP is what it is called ... It promotes violence and disrespect of just about everything that we hold dear

I agree. Great post NLIRG.

Some people prefer to dance around reality and call it "free speech" or "self expression" but the reality is this *cough* music does influence kids and promote violence.

I believe common sense needs to be used when handing out Rights to children. Young minds are so easily influenced and just as easily led astray. It's scary when you see kids idolizing these cRAP'ers, dressing and and acting like them.

Normally we take great concern when an individual expresses a want to kill people and call them sick, but if they do it in music it's called self expression and socially acceptable behavior.

The problem is not in the kids as much as in the adults that protect this sick behavior with the guise of free speech. Kids will always push Rights to the limit and thats why you must limit their Rights until they are mature enough to handle those Rights.

I agree that is part of the problem. But it's not JUST gansta rap...have you ever listened to country music? Drinkin, drugs, beatin women, shootin husbands, etc...just to a different beat.

I believe the music AND movies AND t.v. is part of it but it is also about family and social issues. Not ALL kids that listen to Rap/Country or whatever join gangs, beat their wife etc....I think the social/economical background has a lot to do with it. Growing up I worshiped Motley Crue, Ozzy, etc but never once did I want to do any of the crazy sh*t these people did or stood for...why? Maybe because I came from a somewhat stable family. Kids join gangs because of wanting to be accepted and their social situation. How many of the kids playing on the DCHS bb team are in gangs? Probably not very many because most of the are focused on good things. Think about this though. The illegals that come here get here by breaking the law to begin with. Gangs are the rule in Mexico. They just continue that here. The alternative is working at the meat plant or going to school (which they don't want to do because a lot of illegals don't emphasize education) SOOOO...they join a gang. I believe in crime and punishment first and foremost but until other things change there will always be gangs.
