Three businesses whose clerks violated the city's rules governing alcohol sales will have their beer licenses suspended for a week, and three more will serve 15-day suspensions.
The Dodge City Commission voted 4-0 Monday to approve week long suspensions for the South Dodge Shamrock, the west Kwik Shop, J.T.'s Conoco and the El Coyotes bar. Gene's Heartland and Watersports Campground will each receive 15-day suspensions.
The suspensions will not begin until March 26, which will give the city time to notify the businesses.
Mayor Jim Sherer did not attend the meeting due to a previous commitment.
Clerks at the South Dodge Shamrock, the west Kwik Shop, J.T.'s Conoco and Gene's Heartland were all cited for selling alcohol to minors during a recent undercover operation cracking down on underage drinking. Gene's Heartland has previously been cited for the same offense, which accounts for the 15-day suspension.
A clerk at Watersports Campground was cited Dec. 3, 2006, for selling cereal malt beverages on Sunday and was found guilty Dec. 12, according to a memo from Police Chief John Ball. A Watersports clerk was cited July 3 for selling cereal malt beverages to a minor and was found guilty Dec. 20.
Ball recommended suspending the Watersports license for 15 days for the two violations.
The owner of El Coyotes was cited Nov. 27, 2006, for selling alcohol after hours and was convicted Dec. 19.
Ball said additional cases where clerks were caught selling alcohol to minors are currently pending in Dodge City Municipal Court.
"There will be future operations of this type," he said. "Hopefully, the numbers will go down dramatically as people get the idea they need to follow the rules."
At least some clerks and establishments are cracking down. I bought some beer at Walmart the other day, and they even checked my ID! It was annoying, but made me feel a little younger. Damn, haven't had my ID checked for at least 40 years!!
