| Having coached sports I can honestly say I have yelled at players also. The difference is after yelling at them I then praised them for what they did right and built their esteem back up. Touchy-feely coaching might work in chess but not in competative sports. I did not ever let the players make fun of or put down another player. That was a one-way ticket to benchville. I pulled starters and even lost games when players started thinking the team revolved around them. Win as a team, lose as a team.
I played football in Las Vegas at highschool my sophmore year. When you have a school of 3000+ students, the competition is high. I remember making special metal "sleeves" that I wore under my forearm pads, hitting opponents under the chin every chance I could, calling them names to get them mad and getting them to start fights so they would get called on by the refs. My coaches never asked and I never told. When the stakes are high I can see how many coaches allow, or even teach, cheating. I do not condone it, just can see how they allow it.
