On this day in 1881, Bat Masterson fought his last gunfight in Dodge City

"On this day in 1881, Bat Masterson fought his last gunfight, in
Dodge City, KS. Then he got the hell outta Dodge, as they say. He
subsequently moved to New York where he became a newspaperman, which may be why he is remembered today as a fierce Old West gunfighter - despite the fact that he only ever killed one man.

Bat's last words, which were found on the typewriter in his room, were:

"There are those who argue that everything breaks even in this old dump of a world of ours. I suppose these ginks who argue that way hold that because the rich man gets ice in the summer and the poor man gets it in the winter things are breaking even for both. Maybe so, but I'll swear I can't see it that way." "

He did move to New York but after Dodge City he moved to Denver for years and started a Boxing Club and was a Promoter. He and his partner had a big fall out/ fight and the partner walked away with the Boxing Club. He came back to Dodge City one last time before moving on to New York.

In New York a newspaper writer stated in an article that he killed many men including shooting Indians in the back. He was ok with the first part, but the last part made him so mad he sued the writer, and there was a big trial which Bat won. (As I recall) He claimed to have killed two men that he knows of. When asked if he ever killed any Indians he stated that he shot at Indians in the past but never knew if he killed any.

Just a side note, When writers would exagerate his old west escapades, he would laugh and basically say if some old boy can make some money off his story (be it true or not), let em go for it. He thought the dime novels were a kick because he knew they were not true. Just never say he shot someone in the back.

I like the way he thought. If you are stupid enough to believe everything someone writes then ya deserve to lose the dime. The later was a pretty good testiment to his character I think!............... interesting stuff!
