If you took the time to research the coffee case, you might conclude it had some merit, not to the extent of the jury award, which was reduced on appeal btw.

While McDonalds (or the franchisee) is responsible and therefore liable for the actions of it's staff, seems to me it made a good faith effort to fix it and should limit any liability. But sometimes these suits get filed to not reach court but to force some kind of settlement payday.
