New route sought for U.S. 54

Yesterdays front page of The Hutchinson News. KDOT officials had planned to route the two-lane around the south side of town during future imporvements. With the tornado the agency has an opportunity to purchase property rights without relocating any residents and allow the city to take the highway into cosideration when rebuilding. Greensburg city officials met with KDOT officials and engineers on Thursday to discuss the situation. Greensburg syas they want it to go through town.
I think at this time if they take the highway and go around Greensburg it will just hurt the town more. Any time you take a major highway and move it so traffic don't have to go through the small towns you are just helping them die some more.

I think they sohould leave the hiway the way it is they dont need to move it

Yeah, I agree. If there's a time for us to stand up for the citizens of Greensburg, it's now. They're completely devastated. Moving the highway will just be the last nail in their coffin. Widen the highway and restrict the businesses from using on-highway spaces as parking, which is dangerous to out-of-the-area drivers, and allow it to go through Greensburg. During their rebuilding process, it will teach those that drive through just what a city can do for themselves when they rally together.
