Clinton: Shared Prosperity Should Replace 'On Your Own' Society

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) -- Presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton outlined a broad economic vision Tuesday, saying it's time to replace an "on your own" society with one based on shared responsibility and prosperity.

The Democratic senator said what the Bush administration touts as an ownership society really is an "on your own" society that has widened the gap between rich and poor.

"I prefer a 'we're all in it together' society," she said. "I believe our government can once again work for all Americans. It can promote the great American tradition of opportunity for all and special privileges for none."

That means pairing growth with fairness, she said, to ensure that the middle-class succeeds in the global economy, not just corporate CEOs.

"There is no greater force for economic growth than free markets. But markets work best with rules that promote our values, protect our workers and give all people a chance to succeed," she said. "Fairness doesn't just happen. It requires the right government policies."

Clinton spoke at the Manchester School of Technology, which trains high school students for careers in the construction, automotive, graphic arts and other industries. The school highlighted one of the nine goals she outlined: increasing support for alternative schools and community colleges.

"We have sent a message to our young people that if you don't go to college ... that you're thought less of in America. We have to stop this," she said. But of course...sit on your ass, smoke dope, have kids and we'll take care of you....

Beyond education, Clinton said she would reduce special breaks for corporations, eliminate tax incentives for companies that ship jobs overseas and open up CEO pay to greater public scrutiny.

Clinton also said she would help people save more money by expanding and simplifying the earned income tax credit; create new jobs by pursuing energy independence;perhaps voting to drill in anwar? and ensure that every American has affordable health insurance.AND who will pay for that Hillary???

In 1965, the average corporate chief executive earned 24 times as much as the average worker, The avg chief executive probably has 24 times the education and experience as the avg worker...and more than 24 times the responsibility... she said. By 2005, it was 262 times as much. In the last six years, productivity has increased, but family incomes have gone down, she said, leading to rising inequality and pessimism in the work force.

"It's not as if America hasn't been successful these last six years, but the measure of success does not relate to what's happening in households across our country," she said. what's happening hillary?"It's like trickle down economics, without the trickle."

If you go to work every day and work hard for your money this idea should both frighten you and piss you off....Isn't there a word for this? Where the gov't takes from the wealthy and redistributes income so all are the same???

Not in the sense that the Hildebeast is speaking of. We are a team just like a football team or any other organization that works together but the Generals do not give their pay to the privates.

I’m having a bit of a problem with this since CEO pay jumped considerably during the Clinton years and fell back somewhat after Bush took office. Why is she trying to blame Republicans for CEO pay?

The generals eat in a different mess and sleep in different quarters but the privates get fed, sheltered, and cared for, if not in the manner of generals but just like the generals.

So this was Bush's strategy all along eh? Drive the stock market and the economy down from their previously high levels in order to lower the bonuses and stock option values for company CEO's? Wow, who would have thought that the republicans would actually do something about CEO pay!

I also have a problem with this claim.

Imagine a line composed of every household with children in the United States, arranged from lowest to highest income. Now, divide the line into five equal parts. Which of the groups do you think enjoyed big increases in income since 1991? If you read the papers, you probably would assume that the bottom fifth did the worst. After all, income inequality in America is increasing, right?

Wrong. According to a Congressional Budget Office (CBO) study released this month, the bottom fifth of families with children, whose average income in 2005 was $16,800, enjoyed a larger percentage increase in income from 1991 to 2005 than all other groups except the top fifth. Despite the recession of 2001, the bottom fifth had a 35 percent increase in income (adjusted for inflation), compared with around 20 percent for the second, third and fourth fifths. (The top fifth had about a 50 percent increase.)

Even more impressive, the CBO found that households in the bottom fifth increased their incomes so much because they worked longer and earned more money in 2005 than in 1991 -- not because they received higher welfare payments. In fact, their earnings increased more in percentage terms than incomes of any of the other groups: The bottom fifth increased its earnings by 80 percent, compared with around 50 percent for the highest-income group and around 20 percent for each of the other three groups.

When considering this explosion of work among those in the bottom fifth, remember that they all had children to take care of, that more of these households were headed by single mothers than households in the four better-off groups, and that they had the least money to, say, fix their cars or tide them over if they got sick. Those who do not admire this performance should live for a year on $16,800 and see if they could increase their earnings by 80 percent.

And was it just me, or did all the bold in the first post kind of look like the Communist party line? All in it together, no difference in classes, if your neighbor works hard and gets a Ferrari, then you should get one too. Da Comrade?
