| I wanted to research this a little before I posted .. When we went to Okinawa in 1973...my TB tine test was neg... then coming back 1976...it was positive... I was told it doesn't mean you have it but have been exposed to someone that does...and that I should have yearly x-rays and never do the tine test again...it could cause great damage to your arm or wherever the test was done.. ************************************************** ***** MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: Tuberculin tine test If you have been exposed to tuberculosis, the area will become red and swell like a mosquito bit in 48 to 72 hours. This is considered a positive test result. It means your body's immune system detected the substance injected under your skin. A positive TB tine test does not mean that you have active tuberculosis, only that you have been exposed at some point in the past. A chest x-ray may be taken to evaluate whether you have active tuberculosis. Once you have been exposed, all future TB tine tests will be positive. If you have a positive TB tine test, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you have a TB skin test, unless the first tine test had a blistering or very large reaction. So far ...so good ... maybe TK can expand on the info a little more

| I also, have been exposed, but chest X-rays show that I don't have or have never had TB. However they said I sill always show a positive result to a TB scratch test. They told me that I was probably exposed to it when I worked at a packing plant here in Dodge City many years ago. To which I thought, "thank you illegals and the packing plant industry that hires them."

| Ok sisnce I do TB testing in my clinic - here goes. If you have a + test AND a clear CXR you do have the germ - not the disease. You should take INH and B6 (thiamine) for about 6 months and that is coordinated thru your local health dept. The germ will lie dormant for ever...... even 30 years. TB is an opportunistic disease. It attacks when you are weak. Just this past year there was woman who had diabetis, went in for laproscopic surg and died due to Tuberculosis meningitis. TB doesn't just go to the lungs. I also have seen an immagrant come in to the country and he's dead in 2 weeks. He was in his 70's. There is a target testing form we fill out to determine if you are high risk or not. Where you fall determines how big your test can be. A + test is actually a psudeo granuloma on your arm. IF you have the germ the solution sets up a "TB" enviroment on your arm - the germ attacks that and whammo - postive test results. The "bump" is what's measured. Not the reddness. Lots of folks really don't know how to read tests and think if thier xray is neg - they are good to go. Not so - the germ in your body could become active at any time - it only needs the right circumstances. The meds (inh and B6) encapsulate the germ chemically so it can't attack you (that's why you should take the med even if you don't have the disease). Your body will naturally encapsulate on it's own but when your immune system gets stressed due to some other illness the wall often breaks down and whammo......... you have TB CDC really does have some good info on TB. The TB germ from and ACTIVE CONTAGIOUS case can hang in the air for up to bout 16 hours after the person hacking is gone. It's not always a hacking person either - the germs are sprayed when talking. Thier molecular wt is so light they don't sink to the ground like most germs - therfore the need for the duckbill (r95) mask........... it's a tighter microfiber. Anyway - bottom line is-------- be sure your tester knows how to read, besure you have the right info and always always go look for yourself to decide if you want treatment............. know the risk of refusing........ cause there is some.

| I was told that since I was over 40 that I wouldn't really need to go through the treatment unless I absolutely wanted to.

| whatever ya wanna believe - but your immune system gets weaker with each year................. but the standard response to that would be - hmmmmmmmmmm - I'm sure they are right....................... was it a local MD, nurse or TB MD.................. course ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I guess it's cause you live in KS and the wind blows so much there you are a lower risk............... LOL
