Police: Ex-Marine Shoots 2 Subway Robbery Suspects - News Story - WPLG Miami

PLANTATION, Fla. -- A retired United States Marine disrupted a robbery in progress when he shot two men who attempted to rob a Subway sandwich shop, fatally wounding one of them, police said.

According to Plantation police, two armed men barged into the Subway at 1949 Pine Island Road shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday, demanding money from the employee behind the counter. When they tried to force John Lovell into the bathroom, he pulled out a gun and shot both men, police said.

Donicio Arrindell, 22, was shot in the head and later died at the hospital. Fredrick Gadson, 21, was shot in the chest and ran from the Subway, but police found him in hiding in some bushes on the property of a nearby BankAtlantic.


Lovell, 71, was the lone customer at the time. Police said he had a concealed weapons permit.

A witness who was about to enter the Subway at the time said he thought the shootings were justified.

"I think justice, you know, was served and a civilian was a hero for today," Sebastian Shakespeare said.

Police said Lovell, a retired Marine, wouldn't be charged.

Well, it doesn't apply to all crass generalizations. Just the "criminal scumbag" one.

In the first 96 pages of Les Miserables, Victor Hugo paints a vivid picture of the circumstances that led to one man's incarceration and eventual branding as a criminal. It also shows how a single act of kindness changed this man's life and caused him to positively affect - time and time and time again - those people around him in lesser circumstances.

I think we need to be careful when we carelessly brand people with labels based on a single, possibly atypical, act - especially when concealed weapons give us the capability of acting as judge, jury, and executioner.

So when two armed men barge into a business banishing weapons, demanding money and attempt to force you into a bathroom we shouldn’t jump to conclusions. It might simply be a single, possibly atypical act.

[sarcasm mode] I can see where these actions might be misunderstood as the actions of a criminal scumbag and a highly trained professional is needed to properly interpret the situation.
