Hummmm

People on the streets of Basra cheered the departure of the British.

"We reject any strangers and they are colonialists," resident Rudha Muter told Associated Press Television News. "We are pleased that the Iraqi army are now taking over the situation. We as an Iraqi people reject occupation. We reject colonialism. We want our freedom."

Another resident, Khazaal al-Nisiri, said he was confident the Iraqi army would be able to provide enough security without the British presence.

It’s interesting how you picked certain quotes to post. I found these from the same AP article.

Quote:
"We have recently seen intensive deployment for Iraqi security troops - this indicates that the Iraqi troops are in full control of the situation," he told AP Television. "So the British troops pullout won't cause a vacuum in the area - our security troops are carrying out their duty well."
Quote:
Britain's Defense Ministry said in a statement that U.S. officials had been consulted over the plan, and offered assurances that there was still a large enough British presence in the area to provide security.
Quote:
British forces will operate from Basra Air Station, but "retain security responsibility for Basra until we hand over to provincial Iraqi control, which we anticipate in the autumn," the statement said.
Basically the Brits only moved across town and will oversee the transition of security in Basra to Iraqi forces. Looking at the DOD link below most of the southern part of Iraq has already been turned over to Iraqi forces and Basra is in the most southern tip on the map.

This has been the plan all along and progress is continuing to be made despite what you may hear from the defeatists in Washington and the media. Here’s the official press release from the Defense Ministry.

Readers will find whatever comfort they want in the following links, or they will prompt them to look further to whatever the real answer, if there is one, will be. A couple of the links duplicate the same basic story.

This has been an ongoing news item in England for several months.
Basically the Brits got tired of getting mortared and being in the middle of two rival shiite militias, one of which recently called a cease fire on itself for the next six months.

You can’t show anything untrue in my post. We have a glass half full/half empty situation. Some folks sift through and find negative comments and hold them up as the only truth while ignoring the positive ones. I don’t expect everything to be all hugs and roses when we step down, only that the Iraqis are able to step up and fill the void. In this case they want it; they look ready so we give them a go.

Some of us see a small step in the planned direction of success. Others chose to see only defeat and nothing else.

If I think you're posting an untrue source then I will state it as such. If I think you're being blatantly dishonest then I'm first going to send you a PM before calling you a liar in the open. In this case, the pot to kettle comment was the comment on how it was interesting that she picked certain quotes and not others. You're guilty of it, I'm guilty of it, we're all guilty at one time or another. The "truth" becomes spin for someone's position and not what is really happening around us.

That's where you are mistaken, calling it defeat to support a position as is constantly being spun today is blurring the lines between "truth" and an ideology. It's the old win the battle but lose the war thing. Not for this thread, but over adult beverage at another time; even if it is a virtual beverage, i think we need to define what "victory" is. That could probably get real interesting when we get around to it.

The easiest way is to NOT believe everything you read (or hear), and do your research.
