Fate of DCCC radio KONQ

There has been talk of a few that are wanting to switch KONQ, the local Dodge City Community College radio to a public radio system out of Garden City. This means that the individuality of the station will be lost. I for one will not stand for it. I went through the radio program at DCCC and I enjoyed every bit of it. Somebody suggested that the college just give up the license to this public radio (not local). I do believe that the radio station is going through some major changes, it certainly has changed a lot since I've been there, all of these for the better. The station has new equipment and software, really bringing it to now-days radio. What does everybody think about KONQ switching? I do believe that it is a good opportunity for students to be able to be on air and have fun while they are doing it. I know I enjoyed it, and I would hate to have it taken away from others. If asked SAY NO TO PUBLIC RADIO!!!!
Thanks, let me know what you think

That's a shame - a lot of students have been educated in radio there. Are there just not enough students to operate it with little cost? Seems like on-air would be another lab fee for those students taking live radio classes......I dunno - seems like a shame to me. If they aren't going to operate it locally, why operate it at all? It was the voice of the campus. Operating it out of GC won't be the same.

Thanks grlddg for mentioning this.

Yes, at least one Trustee believes that the DC3 Board of Trustees should give the KONQ license to HPPR. There's even a mention of HPPR mentioning 'our gift' as 'their gift' over their airwaves.

It's a hoodwink in the offering. (conceal one's true motives by elaborately feigning good intentions so as to gain an end)

The first time I was ever on the airwaves was 1990 as some of us high school students took over the DCCC radio station for a summer. My friend Ty and I made up the T & C Happy Hour - w had no format, would play Guns N Roses followed by Anne Murray followed by some unpronouncable spanish record that skipped badly. We had a blast! And listeners!

I also was in college radio when I attended FHSU. There, I actually *gasp* learned how a radio station works - continuity, programming, news, management, etc.

From what I have seen (heard), there isnt much keeping the station here going. They are not on consistant hours and, while I am sure the equipment has upgraded since I was there (no more radial pots???), it still needs to be used as a learning tool - not only for aspiring Howard Sterns, but also for kids wanting to dip their feet into sports play by play, engineering, etc, before jumping in the deep end.

That's what's happening out here. Give your ear a hear, 'ya hear.

Better yet, come out and take a look. The door's open to everyone AND the big chair is always surrendered to students.

I remember the first time I listened to DCCC Radio; Dan Mowry was playing Walk All Over You by ACDC. I love that song to this day. Dan Rocked!
