Clinton: $5,000 for Every U.S. Baby

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday that every child born in the United States should get a $5,000 "baby bond" from the government to help pay for future costs of college or buying a home.
Clinton, her party's front-runner in the 2008 race, made the suggestion during a forum hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus.

"I like the idea of giving every baby born in America a $5,000 account that will grow over time, so that when that young person turns 18 if they have finished high school they will be able to access it to go to college or maybe they will be able to make that downpayment on their first home," she said.

The New York senator did not offer any estimate of the total cost of such a program or how she would pay for it. Approximately 4 million babies are born each year in the United States.

Clinton said such an account program would help Americans get back to the tradition of savings that she remembers as a child, and has become harder to accomplish in the face of rising college and housing costs.

She argued that wealthy people "get to have all kinds of tax incentives to save, but most people can't afford to do that."

The proposal was met with enthusiastic applause at an event aimed to encourage young people to excel and engage in politics.

"I think it's a wonderful idea," said Rep. Stephanie Stubbs Jones, an Ohio Democrat who attended the event and has already endorsed Clinton. "Every child born in the United States today owes $27,000 on the national debt, why not let them come get $5,000 to grow until their 18?"

Britain launched a similar program in January 2005, handing out vouchers worth hundreds of dollars each to parents with children born after Sept. 1, 2002.

Earlier this month, Time magazine proposed a $5,000 baby bond program.


Man...can you talk about "buy a vote"? This would cost over 20 Billion dollars. My question is...would this cover all the little kids born to illegals born in this country because when they shoot out the tube and are born they are citizens....not to mention minorities have a higher birthrate than non minorities this is one more way to secure their vote. I wonder where the money would come from for this program. Hillary didn't say how she would pay for it....I would guess tax raises. This just adds to the "hand out" society we are developing...gimme, gimme, gimme. Why not give TAX incentives for people to save money instead of GIVE them money? I'm poor and I started an investment for my daughter the first month she was alive...if I can do it on a paltry military salary anyone can do it...or I guess I would wait for a Hillary Handout...

See, there in lies the problem. You think Bush is blowing money on the "war on terror". I feel like by fighting the war and keeping our soldiers funded (which the dems have tried to cut) we are keeping your family and my family safe. Lets face it...just because Hillary becomes president doesn't mean Al Queda all of a sudden accepts our lifestyle and won't kill Americans. Wordy, those people would cut the heads off of your family and mine and put the video on Al Jazeera and CNN if they could. Any money we spend to keep the fight over THERE is WORTH it to me. Perhaps it's NOT worth it to you but so be it. I know there is money wasted but that's because it's the U.S. Gov and they are GOOD at wasting money. Name one program the gov't runs where money isn't wasted...

There in lies the problem, Wordy mentioned spending on Iraq, you mentioned the "war on terror". Iraq is not the war on Terror. Just a simple misunderstanding on your part.

You are right...there are no terrorist IN Iraq....what the hell was I thinking. I'm not going to get in the debate either about WAS AL queda there BEFORE we invaded because it has proven that they had ties with Saddam so it's mute issue. I guess you think that there are no terrorist training in Iraq nor are they any terrorist leaders being harbored there. I wonder who stays in the "terrorist safe houses" they have in Iraq.....It's quite an enigma.

Actually "the war on terror" is being conducted in all points of the globe TO INCLUDE my backyard and yours. I don't feel that there are any nations free of terrorists to include OURS. We are fighting terror here, ther Germans, Italians, French, British and even the Russians are fighting against terrorism. You can't confine it to one or two countries. IT's an ongoing global fight. We are fighting it in Iran also....(Do you think we aren't doing black ops in Iran? or flying Drones over Iran spying?)
