Liability insurance is so costly that most small towns cannot afford it.

I am of the mind tho, that no matter the cost, it would be worth it to taxpayers to fund it. I think alot of the problem is where to find the people to run it.

But they would need the USMC there to police it............LOL

Volunteers!!! Get some college kids and parents involved... I'd for sure volunteer... I think it'd also be fun to have like tournaments, or fund raisers that the kids put together!! Since so many kids are into video games, why not something along the lines of halo tournaments or something!! How about fundraisers that the kids could put on by themselves, selling different things they're good at (i.e art, photography, baked goods, ) I would've definatley been involved in something like that when I was in school if it was there.

Hell, I would volunteer as well! It would be fun! Unfortunately, what should happen and what will happen in this town (and world) are two completely different things.

That is probably true. They would need the USMC or Chuck Norris there to maintain control, that's for sure! When we were kids, we got our butts beat if we broke the rules. Kids today are spoiled!!

Maybe they could start a farming program. ie: a "watermelon cooperative"!

That's "racial profiling" Wordy. Just because the blacks do the crime, shouldn't mean they should do the time, because that is just "so unfair"!!

As a frequent "visitor" and an "insider" on correctional facilities, Army, I can say that there is some substance to that answer!

Just like staying in a "Holiday Inn" for free. You just can't leave, and you gotta watch out in the shower!

Get parents involved? A lot of parents don't even give a shit enough to attend the parent teacher conferences at school let alone volunteer their time in the community. There are tons of fund raising activities to be involved in whether it's in school, scouts, big brothers/big sisters ect. For you that have so much time and want to volunteer why don't you give the BB/BS a call. There are tons of kids in Dodge that need a big brother and big sister.

This makes me want to puke. Prisoners should not get anything like a big screen t.v. etc. They are there because they violated someone or something. If they want tv let them draw pictures on a pad and flip it really fast....grrrrrrr. I bet the damned prisoners in Maricopa County don't have big screen tv's.

And they should be made to WORK, not just be on a limited vacation! Put them out on a chain gang in front of the community and work their butts off! Any "free time" should be spent in rehabilitation and education!!

The world gets more screwed up each and every day! I wonder if they thought the inmate was "cruel and unusual" when he murdered someone's daughter for no reason at all???

I will play devil's advocate here..............

I know that what i say will sound like I am soft on criminals, but far from it. Having ran a detention center, I can honestly say that until you have been in one, or had to be in charge of 100 plus inmates, it is hard for somebody to understand. Yes, some prisons are more cushy than others, and it does sound good what Sheriff Joe does, but your are seeing only part of the picture. If Joe's jail is so tough, then why do they still get inmates, and large numbers of them? Why does he get return inmates, didn't they hate it the first time? News flash........not every inmate lives in a tent. Only short timers, and only for a short time. They also don't get crappy food all the time.
While to you and me a tv is taken for granted, in a lock down facility it takes the place of 5 to 10 officers. It is the best babysitter invented. Plus, it is a privelege. Get in trouble, lose the privilege. When your "privies" are very few, you learn to get along so you do not lose them. Same with visits, phone calls, food, new clothes..........it is all part of control. While most of us wouldn't mind being locked in our comfy room at home........try locking yourself in for weeks at a time. No phone, no visits, one channel on your tv which is on for 4 hours a day only, and so on. Loss of freedom, which include freedom of choice, movement, speech........are only important when you do not have them anymore.
Do the crime, do the time. Our system needs to be fixed so that we quit making better criminals.
