Any mandatory sentencing guidelines that require jail time for non violent offenses would require facilities that we currently do not have. We don't currently have the facilities!? But, they are collecting a sales tax to build the facilities. Let's get the ball rolling on changing the ordinance so that we can start filling the new jail when it is built!

Bubba....I think Tee pointed out why we probably would never have that ordinance.

How do we find out what the state law is and what is being enforced in Dodge? Garden gave up stats on how many tickets they gave out last year and so far this year on peeps driving w/o a license. Can we get those stats for DC?

Sherry, you got it right. 3 of the 5 can make it happen. People speaking out in the visitors section at our next regular meeting would also be a good thing. That is on Nov 5 at 7pm at city hall, 806 2nd ave. (if you know of anyone interested).

As for the Officers in Dodge City if a person does not have a valid drivers license and no proof of ID (such as a Kansas ID) then the officers most often arrest. If they have an out of state license and have lived here for at least 2 to 3 months then they are considered to have no valid Kansas drivers license and may be arrested. What happens to them after they are arrested and fond guilty in court is up to the city judge. Judge Doll is the city judge. The City ordance which mirrors the state laws basicly reads that a peson must have a valid drivers license to operate a motor vehicle with in the city of Dodge City. Then the othr laws tell when an officer can and can not arrest.
If you look up the state laws on the State Of Kansas web site the no drivers license law is 8-235. This is where you can look up all the laws of Kansas. Some may require som searching if you do not know the statutes numbers. If you need to know one just ask a LEO on here and I bet they will help you. kansas statutes

Great information. I wonder what happens to them when they go to court on a driving with no license. I wonder what the fine is? I wonder if our fines mirror Garden City?

I watched a 'take down' a few years ago where the driver was cited for no DL, no Insurance and an expired tag. The occupants were checked and one occupant was arrested for failure to appear on identical charges.

Oh, the cited driver was allowed to drive away.

I'm a thinking the wrong people are getting involved (obviously not voluntarily) in the accidents w/ no licence, insurance etc. I'm sure if Rick or any of the other commisioners were to be in the situation where the other driver had no insurance their way of thinking (and motivation of doing) would be a whole lot different.

It's unfortunate that most higher ups will think of what benefits only them, and not the ones they're SUPPOSED to be representing. (not saying always) it's unfortunate because that reason alone is why most of population feel their voice or their opinions don't matter. The higher ups, I feel are completely aware of this and use it the fullest advantage in getting what THEY want.
